CITIZEN OF THE WEEK

month ago. In the picture

We asked Mr. Beck: what
he thought of his wife's hobby. He replied that it was
fine but that "if we didn't
have a daughter who could

cook we would be in pretty
bad shape.”
Mrs. ‘Beck tells us that
the hobby is fine, and she
enjoys concocting fancy
cakes and baked dishes, but
if it was compulsory and
she had to do it for a living,
it wouldn't be so much fun
Anyway, living in a house
where there are elegant
things to eat all of the time
would be pretty wonderful,
except for the figure, of

Deadline Set For
Cancer Society
Memorial Gifts
Thursday, May 26, will be
the last day on which the
Nevada County -branch of
the American Cancer Society will be able to process
memorial gifts .with assurance that acknowledgement
will be delivered before
Memorial Day, it was announced this morning by
Selma Strange, local secretary,
Mrs. Strange advises that
memorial contributions to
the society reach their peak
each year just in advance
of Memorial Day, when
many donors regularly make
gifts honoring loved ones
and friends who have passed
away.
Every memorial gift,
whether large or small, goes
directly into the fight
against cancer, Mrs. Strange
stressed. Each gift helps
support a vast cancer research program, saves lives
through public education
and provides services to
those stricken by cancer.
The plan for memorial
giving is simple. Donors
send their gifts to _the
American Cancer Society.
The society in turn sends
an acknowledgement
card
to the family of the person
being honored, The card
names the donor but does
not indicate the amount of
LIFE HASCOMETOA pretty pass when
a person has to stay inthe office on such
a perfect day..there are so many more
enjoyable things to do than to sit ina
stuffy office and watch all of the lucky
tourists goby. As one acquaintance of
. mine said.."Thisis the kind of a day I
would like to take the broom out ot the
closet and take atrip"..
‘HE SPRING FLOWERS are all in bloom
». the roadside is golden with the pop‘pies and the monkey's paw is peachy
pink along the hills..the lupine is a
purple haze..the snow capped peaks
in the background lend an air of silvery
enchantmentto the blue of the sky, and
the sugar candy clouds float lazily along..the con trails of the jets inthe
sky weave patterns of whimsy. .and
here lam..stuck to a chair..
ONE OF THE MORE interesting things
I attended the past week was the fire
drill at Sierra Memorial..but some
things are better left unsaid. -anyway,
from the time the alarm was telephoned
in to the Sheriff's Office, the Gold Flat
Fire Department appeared on the scene
in @xactly 3 1/2 minutes..and they
carrieda compliment of 24 menandpulled in three pieces ot equipment. After
the drill was over and the hoses, compressors, etc. were put away, the firemen were guests for coffee, cake and
doughnuts..Allinall, it was acomplete
success..less' the unsaid..and..if
the pictures come out,-you willsee
some of the action that took place..
somewhere or other in this issue.
YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN the fancy
hats that were displayed at Mad Hatter's
Day at the N. C. Country Club. First
place for the non-golfers was Mrs. Bob
Chesney..and you would have to see
it to believe it.."A Non-Golfer Looks
at the Language"..mmmm. First place
for the prettiest hat was Mrs. Parker
Fout..she had a jewel box spilled all
over her hat.. heavy to wear, but beautiful. The most original hat was displayed by Mrs. Jim Boot, who had a
golfer teeing off the top of her hat..
and by far the most sad..Mrs. Ed Ryan,
the 1959 club champion..on her hat
was a lady golfer..flat on her face..
But the year isn't over yet..
