Teale Tahoe
Bill Clears
Committee
Legislation by Senator Stephen
P. Teale providing fora $2 million state loan for improved sewage facilities at North Lake Tahoe has cleared its first hurdle
in the Assembly,
The Assembly Water Committee Thursday gave its approval to SB98 by Senator Teale,
and sent the measure to Ways
and Means,
“This legislation is vitally necessary to combat pollution in
the northern part of Lake Tahoe, " Senator T eale told the
committee, “The sewage problem at North Tahoe is critical
if not more so than was that at
South Tahoe.” A Teale-authored measure providing-a $1.8million loan for expanded sewage facilities and an export system at South Tahoe has been
signed intolaw by Governor
Brown.
Senator Teale advised the
committee he had attended a
meeting at North Tahoe Wednesday night, at which provisions were planned for formation
of a regional sanitation authority to serve the Lake's north
and west shores and the DonnerTruckee area as well. He said
it may be possible to obtain a
federal economic development
agency grant for part of the
eventual area -wide treatment
and export system, 1 i
Senator Teale pointed out that
SB98 requires that the two public utility districts --North T ahoe
andTahoe City --approve bonds
and complete annexations before
they can obtain the state money. He said that steps have
been taken tocall the bond
elections andtoannex territory presently between the service areas of the two districts.
The money in SB 98 will be
the first $2-million deposited
in the State Water Pollution
Control Fund from tidelands of1
revenues, as provided bya
Teale~-sponsored amendment to
AB 12 by Assemblyman Carley
Porter of Los Angeles, This bill
has been signed into law. The
agency designated to make the
loan is the State Water Quality
Control Board,
