Published Wednesdays, Nevada City Amaral prezoning, annexation approved by council Prezoning and annexation of Frank Amaral’s 28 acres north of Nevada City were approved aad by the Nevada City coun¢c The acreage was prezoned for limited industry, 18 acres, and three small parcels totaling 10 acres were prezoned for multiple family dwellings. The vote for prezoning was four to one with Arch McPherson the no voter, The.vote to annex the property was unanimous, Both the prezoning and annexation go into effect in 30 days, ‘ After thé second reading of the ordinance for prezoning but . before the vote Mayor John Rankin asked city attorney William Wetherall if controls on the type of business or architecture controls could still be placed on the ‘property. Wetherall said "noton this area if you pass the prezoning tonight," Wetherall said it was "anomalous" to place architectural controls on a limited industrial zone, but such controls could be place on local business zones, Councilman Bob Paine urged . the council to continue discussion of controls for zoning and "not let the matter drop, I do not like to give blanket authority as we've done tonight.” Paine and McPherson were appointed as a liaison committee to work with the planning commission on changes and more controls on the zoning ordinance, Amaral was asked if the silversmith was still going to build on the newly annexed property. The city’s 20 per cent share of the project would be $28,000 with the total project approximately $144,000, The council also approved spending the $28,000 from undistributed reserves, "We have the money in the budget," Robinson teld the council, If EDA approves the project Nevada City will have two new parking lots, one on Nevada Street and one behind the National Hotel, $25,000 will be spent on restoring Ott's Assay Office and the city will have 44 _ to 46 gaslights on Broad Street, placed 50 feet. apart, Paine suggested that Ott’s be used as a public information office and that the Nevada City Chamber or Commerce be housed there, He also asked ap‘proval to appear before the supervisors today to suggest that the county chamber be housed in the historic building. Approval was granted for Paine to speak to the supervisors at today’s meeting. , Underground utilities will be placed on Broad Street in August, Robinson told the council, and Broad Street will be resurfaced, hopefully in September. If the EDA grant is approved "the town will be chaos for a few months," The council agreed "it will be worth it." Paine said he had heard only oné complaint about the proposed changes and chaos, "and he has a back entrance to his business so would not be inconvenienced," ; ‘McPherson reported that he attended a recent planning commission meeting and a tentative ordinance change was prepared to allow one advertising sign per national or regional dealership or franchise for any businessman whose signs are visible from the freeway.
