. by the Mariners’ organization of
the Sierra United Presbyterian
church from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.
May 6 at the Nevada City
Veterans’ Memorial Hail.
This public affair is to raise
funds for the projects and
benevolences of the church. It
will include a choice of ravioli,
spaghetti, or a smaller serving
of both, with appropriate side
dishes for a complete dinner.
The Sierra United
Presbyterian Church is a
relatively young organization in
the community, and meets on

organized along nautical lines.
There are now two ships in its

photo is receiving speech
therapy as.a result of conditions
found during the Nevada county
preschool Hearing, SpeechLanguage, Vision. screening
clinic held last spring. The
speech clinician is helping them
with their speech-language
problems.
Parents of pre-school children
in Nevada county have been
pleased to learn that many
problems in hearing, learning,
speech-language, vision areas
can be helped before the child
enters kindergarten.
This is the best time to work
on problems in any of -these
areas. Research has shown that
the time during infancy and the
preschool years is a period of:
foundation building for all later
learning. One in every five
children has some difficulty in
one of these areas.
The fifth annual preschool
screening clinic will again be
offered for 3-to-4-year-olds living
in western Nevada county. It
will be held May 7, 8 and 9, 1973
at the Seventh Day Adventist
Church on Alta Street in Grass
Valley.
The Nevada County Schools
and the Nevada County Health
Department are conducting this
screening clinic. Children born
between December 2, 1968 and
April 30, 1970 may* be seen
during the clinic this year. In
order to schedule children so
that there will be a minimum of
waiting, it is necessary for the
parent or guardian to make an
appointment by calling Mrs:
Mitchell in the Nevada County
Superintendent of Schools office,
265-2461, ext. 215, April 30
through May 3 between 8:30 and
4:30 p.m. There will be no
charge for screening.
Answering -the following
questions about your child may
help you decide to call for an
appointment:
Does your 3 to 4 year old child:
Seem not to hear you when you
speak to him?
Speak so differently that it is
difficult for you to understand
him?
Shut or cover one eye or tilt his
head when looking at common
objects?
Have frequent earaches or
draining ears?
Show many hesitations,
repetitions or stops and starts
when he talks?
Have difficulty in recognizing
common objects?
Bump into or trip over objects
frequently?
Point or show you instead oftalking?
North San Juan
Do you know what a ‘“‘Transfer
Station” is? Well, a “Transfer
Station” is another name for
city dump. There is a lovely,
restrained, well-bred little green
and white sign newly making its
chaste appearance along the
French Corral road, and it
announces: ‘‘Birchville Transfer Station.” Dignity is added
to our frequent trips with the
garbage cans, as we wend our
precarious way between the
chuckholes and other hazards to
the ‘‘Transfer Station.” And the
great care that is being taken to
make sure that the entrance
drive has a fine, sturdy roadbed
is almost enough to take our
minds off the condition. of the
county highway.
The little old Birchville
School is going to have a new
lease on life, for a short time at
least. In order to accommodate
a kindergarten, which will add
15 or 20 children to the
enrollment in the San Juan
Ridge Union school district, the
building is going to be repaired
and refurbished, and put into
use again, until the new school is
built. The help of many parents
is going to be required, as there
isn’t much money available for
this purpose. However, the
building is in surprisingly good
condition after being empty for
so many years. It will be good to
see children playing and
working there once more, if only
for a short time.
The second annual Spring
Fling, a money-making affair
concocted by the women’s
society of the North San Juan
Methodist Church, was its usual
success. Offerings for sale included baked goodies, potted
plants, a table of variety items.
such as aprons, notepaper, etc.,
and a silent auction of white
, elephants. A delicious luncheon
was sold at a very~ nominal
price. Proceeds from this event
will go into thé restoration fund
for the old Methodist Church.
Reverend Haven Martin, who is
shared by the church in Nevada
City and the North San Juan
church attended and brought
along a group from Nevada City.
Scotch broom and mothers
will be honored May 13,
Mother’s Day, when the North
San Juan Volunteer Fire Dept.
serves its annual Scotch Broom
Breakfast, which is a timehonored tradition. A tasty
breakfast will be served: and
local dignitaries will grace the
event as they always have,
especially in election years. We
have no election this year, but
I’m sure we'll enjoy the participation of some anyway.
By the way, I do hope Mr.
Willie Curran, supervisor for
this district, was misquoted in at
least some of his remarks
“concerning the sewage problem
in North San Juan. Granted, the
disposal and water systems here
are a mess, and something
must be done. However, I don’t
know of anyone ‘‘living in filth’’
out here. An unfortunate choice
of words, to say the least.
