For where are we 20 years later1945 vs1965. Are we, the great powers of the world moving closer and closer to the military confrontation which nobody wants and which nobody knows how to avoid? Twenty years agowe were confined to our tents ona windy dusty plateau in Southern Italy. President Harry S. Truman, but 26 daysin office was, on the armed forces radio proclaiming the end of the warin Europe. In the three weeks previous, history had been piling up so fast that it was most difficult to keep it in proper perspective. Franklin Roosevelt had died in Warm Springs, Georgia. Hitler had swallowed poison. Benito Mussolini had been cornored like a rat and shot dead by the common people of Italy. The battle for Italy had been the longest, most bitter campaign of World War II. When the men of the Fifth Army veterans of Tunisia and Sicily were slugging up the bloody beachhead of Salerno most of the American soldiers that were to win the war on the Western Front -the South Pacific and Japan were training or still civilians. In its early stages, the Battle for Italy held the world's spotlight. Athomenearly everybody knew about Hangman's Hill or the Rapido River or the tragic history of the Anzio Beachhead. Then after the fall of Rome, the Italian Front became the “forgotten front”, But forgotten or remembered, it was the same grim war of mud, mules and mountains to the foot Mussolini, the Facist tyrant that betrayed his Italian people, lies dead with his mistress Claretta Petacci. When itwas over it left harsh memories, many deadanda hope that it wouldnever happen again.
As this is written on May 18, 1965 20 years latermy thoughts go back tothe audience I had with Pope Pius a few days after Rome fell and of the words he spoke to us on that memorable occasion. Two of mys friends had gone AWOL with me to Rome Charles Dynes,. now with Telstar communication satellite and Allen Stewart, now with the St. Louis Dispatch, From Southern Italy we found the road tothe Eternal City a road of abandoned tanks and hastily dug foxholes, We hitched a ride on a British lorry and travelled through the battle scarred terrain where only yesterday as fleeting time is recorded, were fought the battles of liberation. We passed through blood-soaked Cassino and saw not a single living creature among its flattened ruins. Not as much asa dog scampered in its blasted doorways. At high noon Pope Pius received us. He proceeded up the long aisle in St. Peters on a chair of state carried on the shoulders of orange and blue satin clothed Swiss Guards, After giving us his blessing, he spoke to the assemblage in English andFrench,. Hesaidhesaw many uniforms but only one people. He asked that we erase the revenge from hearts and find a place for THE brotherly love for an enduring peace that must follow. An enduring peace?
