Howell-North Books of Berkeley, for example, is soon coming out with two major works on this area--Gerald Best's much anticipated book on the Nevada County Narrow Gauge, and "Cities of Gold" by James Morley, a tour with pictures of historic Grass Valley and Nevada City. From another. quarter --the bulletin of the Sacramento chapter of the Sierra Club--comes the information that on June 6, Sunday, localconservationists Helen Liotta and Dorothy Sanders will lead a club walking trip from Nevada City to Scotts Flat reservoir. Hereis how the bulletin describes the walk: "A stroll along the irrigation ditch. Pleasant forest trail, spring flowers--a botanist’ s delight. Fine family trip. Local people who want to know more about the beauty in their own back yard are welcome to join the trip, whether they are club members or not. Just call one of the leaders. And in that same Sierra Club publication there is a description of another Nevada County trip, this one tothe area north of--and this is a quote--“New Donner (Stevens) Summit." Sothose who continue to plug for the name Elisha Stevens Pass for the new summit road, take heart. The word is getting out. The Nevada City Elks’ successful flying trip to see the Giants win a doubleheader Sunday was actually made aboard a bus, but the amusements were such that time seemed to fly. seth ht If you think modern day advertising has gotten out of hand, get this, from “Century” magazine, in an issue dated exactly half a century ago: “Bad refrigerators won't keep sickness out of your home. Though low of stature, these little wayfarers atone for it by brilliancy of color, their pink blossoms having a peculiarly clear, fresh wide-awake appearance, reminding one of a rosy-faced country wench. Rich masses of them appear between large shrubs amongst dry grasses in hard soil making a brilliant contrast between beauty and stark dryness. throat, marked with 5 red crescents. Pale green lanceshaped leaves appear opposite each other at sparse intervals on the stems. Early Spanish-Californians always kept a bunch of these dried herbs strung up on rafters to use as a remedy for fevers and for its antiseptic properties. These make a brilliant showing between the shrubs at Hell's Half Acre in the month of July when the grasses have turned brown. After leaving the "Y" intersection of Ridge Road and Marysville
Highway upon leaving Grass Valley, watch for them on the left side of the road just over the barbed wire fence. the CATHERING MOSS Someone Out There May Be Watching People watching, according to Our pets, is great sport. Both Mr. Kennedy, the miniature tiger who owns us, and Zsa Zsa, thé canine glamour girl of Seven Cedars, spend a large part of every day at this fascinating pasttime. Mr. Kennedy, being one of this earth's smaller creatures(in physical size only), must of necessity do his people watching up close. Each morning, from a perch beside the basin, he observes the male ritual of shaving, following each brush stroke, then peering into the drain as the last suds go sliding down. When either of us is bathing he prow ls around the edge of the tub and cautiously touches the water from time to time, apparently trying to figure out just why we choose to do this silly thing. Each time one of us passes from one room to another, unless he is sleeping ver y soundly, we can feel his eyes following our every movement. Often I will look up from reading or writing to find him staring at me, which can be downright disconcerting at times. Zsa Zsa is intensely interested in the whole parade of humans going about theirdaity activities. She accompanies me on most of my outdoor projects as a devoted dog should, somewhat more religiously when Mr. Kennedy also is in attendance. When Iam away, or closeted with my typewriter or drafting board, she takes a position ona terrace overlooking the highway. Often she puts in a full working day there, ANNOUNCING new FARBER FORD USED CAR LOT GLENBROOK (next to Glenbrook Van Gas) TO BETTER SERVE OUR CUSTOMERS, FARBER FORD IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF THE NEW USED CAR LOT GLENBROOK fromnineto five, watching every vehicle that passes, keeping an eye on telephone company, P,G. & E, orN. I, D. employees who use our road, and scrutinizing anyone else who comes on the premises. When we are out hiking we often find ourselves being watched just as intently by a deer, marmot, coyote or other wild beastie as we are watched at home by our tame animals. The things we do must appear stupid or useless to them and sometimes I think they are right. Many of the activities on which we humans spend so much time are indeed quite senseless and serve no good purpose.
