LARKSPUR or GLAUCOUS ROCK Y MOUNTAIN LARKSPUR
22, 1963...Page 3
by Lillian Mott
Crow foot
Slender stalks of larkspur densely
liant purple -blue or sky~-blue flowers,
bright color on our wooded slopes or in open fields of the
lower elevations. Many species and colors of larkspur are
found in California but this one is the most commonly
found here and may be found at some locations from
early spring to late summer, It greatly resembles our
cultivated larkspurs and grows from one to three feet
tall, The common name derives from the resemblance ~
_of the upper sepal to the spur of a bird but the giver of
‘the scientific name thought that the buds resembled dol"
iphins as pictured in decorative art of ancient times, so
. applied the Greek word meaning little dolphin.
