BYWAYS — BY DEAN THOMPSON COMMON DENOMINATOR...In a speech before a Lions Club district convention this weekend at Hoberg's in Lake County, Jim Sexton laid great emphasis on the need for an expanded international relations program within local Lions clubs, Sexton, of Arizona, is one of the international directors of Lions International. He praised those clubs in Northern California which are taking part in student exchanges, people-to-people letter writing programs, and several other projects to bring about better understanding between peoples of the world. While the activitieshave not been solely supported by local Lions clubs in Nevada County, residents of this area have every reason tobe proud of the part their community hastakenin projects which have international understanding as their foundation. Worthy of praise: the Nevada Union High School student body program to host 4 foreign high school student _ this coming school year...the 4H Intemational Farm Exchange Youth program which will send Felicia Schaps to Argentina this fall to live with a farm family in that country...the International Student Weekend visit to Nevada County of more than 50 students and family members from the large group of foreign students studying at the University of California, Davis. Lions clubs in this area have had a part in these programs, through club orindividual participation. So have the Rotary clubs, and numerous other organizations and individuals. We feel sure Sexton would applaud the local activities, although praise has never been asked by local groups or individuals involved in participation. We mention Sexton's talk here because we feel Nevada County isa leader in the move toward finding world understanding by first finding areas of understanding between individuals of the world. Sexton calls thjs."finding the common denominator" from which he hopes the world can progress to understanding at the level of world problems. eee eee 8 & SHORT SHOTS. .. Edmund G, Brown, and Richard Nixon during the past three weeks or so... Monday morning the count showed Shell leading with 44, 847 peanuts, Brown second with 41,730 peanuts, Nixon a poor third at 29,752 peanuts. When this stunt first started we mentioned to a Shell Supporter thatthe "peanut poll" proved Shell backers liked to eat peanuts. Atthis point, we're not sure that the poll is more accurate than some Nixon supporters would like to admit. W hen we first heard candidate Shell as he began his campaign, there seemed little chance for the assemblyman to snare the GOP nomination from former governor ‘NLMA Special Committee Timber Fellowship Set BERKELEY ----A graduate fellowship in timber engineering was established last month in the University of California's Department of Civil Engineering through a grant from the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, The grant was announced recently by Dr. Nicholas V. Poletika, a member.of the tional Wood Promotion Program of NLMS,, the $3,000 fellowship is intended to encourage an interest in tim™ ber engineering both asa major topic for graduate study and as an attractive career field. “We also hope the fellowship will encourage greater interest intimber engineerfaculty," Dr. Poletika said, "and that it will encourage the wood industry to become on Technical Studies.and vice president of research at the Union Lumber Company, Fort Bragg, California. IEH MEANS 12 YEAR MORTGAGES ANYWHERE Re-elect CHARLES R. KITTS (Incumbent) Nevada County ASSESSOR Tuesday, June 5, 1962 TRAINED..by the best FUNERAL CHAPEL 246 Sacramento St Nevada City Goodwin Knight and farmeslieutenant governor Bud Powers. They were his opponents at that time, and it appeared that Nixon would stay out of the race. When Nixon entered the battle, there appeared to be even less chance of a Shell victory. This seemed true even after Knight and Powers dropped from the race. But itbecame evident several weeks agothat the Shell campaign in Nevada County was rolling along in high gear. It was going at breakneck speed before Nixon even got his headquarters open. Isit not, therefore, possible that the "peanut poll” fairly accurate for this county? Let us assume that it is possible. Then let us remember back to the next time we saw candidate Shellin Grass Valley. He, too, reported that his campaign in this county was exceptionally well organized and proceeding at a clip faster than average throughout the rest of the state. But he also said that there were four other counties with similar organization and results--Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego. It happens that those five counties have morethan 1.4 million of the less than 2.7 million registered Republicans in the state. While the local "peanut poll" likely is no good measure of Gov. Brown's support in this area, and while it cannot be used as proof that Shell is that strong in his party throughout those other four major counties, it w ould seem to indicate that Nixon's popularity is at a level here which could see the makings of a major upset in the GOP primary, Californians may be making national history in their primary campaign this year. teacher -experience Interest Paid Quarterly} {% ‘CURRENT ANNUAL RATE PAID ON SAVINGS Accounts insured to $10, 000 by an agency of the U, S.
