~ 12 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, May 24, 1972
“Notes off
By P. L. Smith
This column received a post
card bearing a picture of Wapses
Lodge Roundabout in Caterham,
England, recently..from Mrs,
William (Helen) Rupert of
Novato. Our readers will no
doubt recall the excellent ree
cepes which Helen contributed
to the ‘‘Cook’s Corner” in January of this year. One for an
especially tasty Plum Conserve
and the other for spicy Enchiladas. Helen had this to say on
the card dated May 4th: "I flew
to England last week and am
visiting old friends for two
weeks, I brought some of the
Nugget recipes along for them.
Will get up to Nevada City in
the Fall,”
Many thanks, Helen, for the
thoughtful message..we appreciate your kindness.

The American Humane Association is a truly wonderful organization. Their efforts to ede
ucate the people to prevent mistreatment of animals wherever
they are being exploited is significantly stated in a recent
issue of the Association Newsletter. They are working
towards the day that suffering
is eliminated, and, the words
*¢ Kindness For All . Living
Things” becomes a reality..
to quote from the editorial cole.
umns of the publication.
Under the title ‘*Cats, Rats
and Butterflies?’ one particularly interesting article contains
the following: ‘1971 was a
banner year for animals appearing in motion pictures and tele
evision (including commercials).
The AHA _ Hollywood Office
supervised over 15,400 animals
during the past year, andtraveled to Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Mexico, covering some 57,800 miles. A
thousand days of supervision
involving 32 motion pictures and
329 TV episodes were logged
by the staff, as they watched
over 6,400 horses,4,600 cattle,

strongly supported..in this
writer’s opinion.

And, further on the subject
of inhumane treatment of defenseless animals..I always
dread the onset of hot summer
days for one specific reason..
People who so thoughtlessly and
stupidly lock their dogs or other
domestic pets in vehicles parked
in unshaded locations...while
they go about their businessobviously unconcerned for the
animal(s) welfare. Just how
long could the friver and,or,
passengers (human) of those vehiclesstand the heat before
suffocation-or, in. some situations, literally ‘‘roasting
alive’? Yet they frequently
expect their “‘pets®’ (so-called)
to take it and like it and emerge
with wagging tails and renewed
loyalty! That old saying, “‘I
wouldn't do that to a dog,"
certainly does not apply in'such
cases,
