a ‘ 4 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, May 24, 1972 Washington Best budget in 10 News By JUDI STEWART Elain and Mervin Berkey have moved from El Cerrito to their summer home here in Washington, Ten years ago the Berdeys bought the Hamelton place south of Washington Creek. They have spent every summer here, but now they are full-time residents of our come munity. : +++ Howard Vance is recovering from surgery. He is home now and doing well according to wife Irene, +++ Marcy Fisk is still on the mend from eye surgery. Marven ree ports she is improving. ++ + David Pyland, long-time resident of Wahington is a patient in the Vererans’ Hospital in Reno. He is seriously ill and we are praying for his recovery, + +4 Another accident on Maybert Road occurred on Friday night late, Five tourists, who apparently were not. in complete control of themselves, ran their car off the road. The vehicle rolled towards the river but fortunately for them it was stopped by one of the few trees in the area; otherwise, the vee hicle and its occupants would have ended up in the river with probable tragic results. None of the five were seriously hurt, but the car is a complete loss, At last report the car was still there. We hope they remove it, so it does not become ane other abandoned vehicle along this road. ++ + Mr. and Mrs, Harold Hueckel were visiting the building site of their summer home this past week, Their home is being built by Jack Mannell on Maybert Road between the Hampton and Nance places. ++ 4 Marie Stockton, our cook at the school, has been ill and un able to work for two weeks, Substitute cook Cally has been feeding our kids, Marie hopes to be feeling well enough to return to work Monday. years, manager says A balanced budget of $637,000 with 10 per cent salary increases for most employes, was approved Monday by the Nevada City Council. "This is the best budget in 10 years," City Manager Beryl Robinson Jr. said. "It's the first time we've been able to pay comparable wages." The city employes' group requested 10 per cent salary increases and/or raises comparable to other cities of the same size. The most generous raises in 10 years were included inthe fiscal 1972-73 budget, 10 per cent for all but three employes; five per cent for the water collector (as requested by the employes' group), 12 1/2 per cent increase for the city manager and a15per cent increase for the superintendent of public works. The council also raised City Attorney William Wetherall's salary by $100a month. Wetherall's increase was at the insistance of the counci) members who said: "who knows how many hours Bill devotes to city business?" The budget includes a fund balance of $25,000, federal grants of $200,000 and state gas tax monies of $80,000 with the remainder of $331,000 to be raised locally through property taxes, parking meters, business licenses, court fines, sales tax, cigarette and gas tax levies. The council also approved the employes' group's request for cancellation of the present form of health insurance ‘and acceptance of Blue Cross, with an increase cost per employe to the city of 33 cents. A uniform allowance of $10 a month was also granted the two fire truck drivers, another request made by the employes’ association, To complete acceptance of the requests made by the employes, although it does not affect the budget, the council approved 60 days maximum accumulation for sick leave, double the amount the employes may accumulate now. With the budget, adopted Monday, city residents will pay the same tax rate, $2.23, for fiscal 1972-73 as for the past several years, The rate will be used in exactly the same proportions as in previous years with the exception of the 18 cents previously collected for the library. As the city will no longer fund the library the 18 cents will go into the employe retirement fund. "This will almost pay the retirement," City Manager Beryl Robinson Jr. said. Only a small amount will have to come from the general fund, he added. In other action Monday the council approved purchasing two parcels of land from the state and accepting a third as a gift. The city approved purchasing the parking lot on Nevada Street for $14,000; a small parcel on Spring Street for $600 and accepting a green belt area along the freeway near the Sacramento Street overcrossing.
