The Life Of-A Newspaper Editor Has
Changed Little In The Last 100 Years
NEVADA CITY May 1864
On the 26th of May, 1864, the
editor of the Nevada Daily Transcript was concerned with many
local items for his issue of the
next day,
There were the usual local
manifestations of the Civil) War-flags were presented to guard
units, ladies societies prepared
to meet, met, and sent off great
bundles of bandages and knitted
socks, The editor had a standard
item on the marshal's progress
with Chinese prison labor repairing damagedstreet planking. He
planned to recount the experiences of arun-away carriage over
the crowded Pine Street bridge
and the county's progress in
building the new courthouse.
The early summer cattle drives
had begun and the editor made
note of the approximate number
of animals which hadpassed
through town the day before. The
next issue would carry the Post
Office's regular appealto missing
persons tocome in and claim
their mail, In mid-afternoon the
editor took a break which he described to his subscribers.

A WELCOME VISIT OR-Michael
Long, theicecream man. Every
day or two the smiling face of
Michael may be seen coming into
the office, and gracefully presenting a well filled dish of ice
creamtoeachone, Down go the
“sticks, " the clicking of the type
is hushed, and the quietude of
the office is broken by ejaculations of praise and thanks for
Michael's generosity. Occasionally, the “devil, " with his usual
impudence, like Oliver Twist,
exclaims: "Please, sir, I want
some more!" We don't wonder
at it for Michael has got the ice
cream business reducedto a
science, and during these hot days
it certainly is a great luxury. He
has fitted up an elegant saloon
for ladies and gentlemen, on
Broad Street, where all who call
on him will be treated in the best
possible manner.

Valley area. These mats tell of
the tasks of stewardship now facing
everyone,
The Nevada County SCD Chairman said thatthis year more than
ever responsibility of town and
city dwellers for conserving the
soils is being emphasized in the
observance. “City folk have a
great stake," he said, “in what
happens to the land which feeds,
clothes, shelters and gives us day
to day comforts and pleasures.
What's more, the responsibility
willshift more and more to urban
shoulders as the national and urban population grows and productive acreage of land is reduced
by competing demands on it. “
“Now we have abundant food
and fiber. It is a blessing that
we cannot expect to continue
automatically. Only wise use
and conservation of resources now
can assure dependable supplies for
the future, " Luglan said.
