The chaparral-clad Santa
Lucia Mountains hem in this
lovely. valley through which the
Carmei River flows, Farms,
orchards, pasisceland, picturesque estates and ranch
homes lie in the sun-warmed
valley where fog is seldom seen
although the coast may be
cloaked in the white fluff.
A good starting point for a
tour of the valley is Mission
San Carlos Borromeo del Rio
Carmelo, Carmel Mission,
which was founded in 1770 in
Monterey but moved a year later
by its founder, Junipero Serra,
to its present site overlooking
the Carme) River. Serra is
buried here and a beautiful
sarcophagus cut from California
marble, with a bronze effigy
of Serra, and figures of three
kneeling and mourning padres —
the work of Jo Mora — are
in the memorial mortuary chapel
near the entrance to the church.
The church is distinctive
among the Franciscan establishments in its architecture; the
massive south tower with its
outside stairway and its Saracenic dome is exceptional.
Noteworthy, too, is the star
window in the gable.
As you look eastward through
the valley, the mountains pile
up one behind the other, a purple
haze gathered in their hollows,
a calling card urging you on
to discover their treasures,
About six miles east from
the valley entrance is the
Carmel Valley Begonia Gardens
which always welcome visitors,
Peak blooming season for the
flowers' is mid-August through
early September,

the right about two-and-a-half
miles from the valley entrance
that twists and climbs past a
redwood grove and eventually
leads. to the 22,000-acre
Oppenheimer Ranch, the old
Rancho San Carlos, Although .
the property is private, you
can get a good view of the
57-room white hacienda built
in 1923 by George GordonMoore.
At one time this gigantic ranch
had its own polo field, private
airstrip, racetrack and game
refuge.
Another side trip off the
Carmel Valley Road is out
Robinson Canyon Road which
crosses the river and runs past
pear orchards, cool wooded
canyons and redwoods, The old
oaks along the route are covered
with moss and the fence posts
with lichen, About 10 miles in
is a meadow with the ruins of
four buildings, This is an old
goat ranch where author Robert
Louis Stevenson supposedly
found shelter during one of his
epic hikes through this country.
If you're looking for a panoramic view of the valley from
the north side, take Ford Road
which climbs gradually past a
number of homes, meadows of
tall grass and wildflowers.
Looking downward, you can
follow the course of the Carmel
River by the willows and green
sycamores, nhs
