KING & SON our meetings here with our Nevada County officials, and the good cooperation we have had with them, and how nice it was when people can get together and talk things over listening and understanding both sides of our problems. Gladys Harper, this writer and director of Region #11, spoke on the meeting which had been held two Sundays before to alert our members to the three dangerous bills then being considered, and how every one had been so good to write letters of protest to all the members on the _ Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee of which Mr. Wm. Bagley was chairman, and the replies from some of these to our letter writers; I believe the committee was receiving over 500 letters apiece in protest to these bills. Seems. like everyone is trying to get onthe bandwagon, but you be the judge yourself, Feel Crowded? If it seems to be getting a little crowded these days, consider: The world’s population is growing by about 2.2 persons per second, 132 per minute, 190,000 a day, and more than 1.3 million a week. The 2.2 gain is based on 3.9 births and just under 1.7 deaths each second. The figures, garnered chiefly from United Nations sources by the World Population Data Sheet, indicate a global population on. July 1 more, since no one. really knows how-many ple there are in Red China. Some estimates top the UN ae for that nation by 50 million. Whatever we who have been around awhile may think of this old a reg today, it’s certainly inviting a lot of newcomers. LARGEST SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET—Coils of the world’s largest superconducting magnet are lowered into their steel yoke at the AEC’s Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago. These coils, which weigh 110 tons, operate at temperatures near absolute zero, about 451 degrees below zero, Fahrenheit. At these temperatures the magnet generates 18.5 kilogauss (a unit of magnetic field strength) with essentially no consumption of electricity. The magnet will be used with the world’s largest bubble chamber for detecting high-energy atomic particles.
