Of the 37 California law
enforcement officers that
graduated Friday from a 10week academy. conducted by
the Modesto Junior College
Regional Criminal Justice
Training Center, nine are from
the local area.
Local graduates include
John Webber of the. Grass
Valley Police Department;
Donald. Bernall, Robert
-Gemignani, Harry . Hillman,
Gary Jacobson, Danny Lewis,
Ricky Richardson, John South
and Wayne Wagstrom, all of
the Nevada County Sheriff’s
Department.
The graduates, which includes three women, have
completed a 400-hour basic
law enforcement course at the
center located on the college’s
west campus. A first-of-itskind in the nation, the center
serves working criminal
justice personnel and college
students who are studying
administration of justice.

Workshop .
gets donation
Nevada County Community
Workshop was_ recently
presented with a check for
$641.75 designated for the
workshop from the federal
employes of the NevadaSierra Combined Federal
Campaign.
A portion of this money will
be used by the workshop to buy
the parts necessary to make.
the newly acquired forklift
operable. The workshop
purchased the used forklift
from the government surplus
outlet after waiting six months
for notification that onewas
available for purchase.
The workshop has a large
woodshop operation and
moves several thousands of
board feet per year. This
forklift will substantially cutdown. on the number of man
hours needed to move this
lumber by hand.
Chappie urges
local applications

Chappie (R-Ro:ville) today
urged cities ay counties to
apply for gran’ ‘rom the offhighway vehi ©. fund.
Under the Chappie-Z ’Berg
Act of 1971 cities, counties, and
other local agencies may
apply for up to 50 percent
funding from the State
Department of Parks and
Recreation as grants in aid for
establishing trails for offhighway vehicle use. Also,
acquisition and development
costs will be reimbursed by
the State for up to 75 percent.
Funds for the program are
derived from a portion of the
$15 fee paid for off-highway
vehicle registration and
identification and from gas
taxes paid gn vehicles used for
off-highway recreation.
LYMAN GILMORE came in first in the Nevada county
writing tournament held last week. Cathy Laubinger
of Gilmore won the argumentative and creative portion for seventh graders at left. Mark Hinman, an
eighth grader at Gilmore was the argumentative winner for his grade, Anna Hosbein from Mt. St. Mary's
won for expository (a seventh grader) and Brooke
Worthington, an eighth grader at Mt. St. Mary's won
‘for creative and expository writing. Contestants
were from Gilmore, Mt. St. Mary's, Seven Hills,
Pleasant Ridge, and Forest Lake.
Math contest
NEVADA COUNTY'S annual math contest was held
recently at Lyman Gilmore School. Host Gilmore was
first place winner for the second consecutive year,
