Next Wednesday is a red letter day, as all three bands and the elective chorus will present a 8 concert at 7:30 p.m. in the gym under the direction of our music master, John Blazevic. Among the bands’ selections will be Beethoven’s ‘Overture Eroica,”’ Cole Porter’s ‘‘Begin the Beguine,” and “Big Band Dixie” by John Edmonson. The chorus will sing music in the = vein. The concert is An extra-special event for the eighth graders was held Thursday. Rotary Club of Nevada City sponsored a Career Day;Charles Mumgaard of the faculty was in charge of arrangements. . Volunteer speakers in the fields-of journalism; banking, forestry, earth moving, engraving and insurance were present to talk about their careers and answer questions. Other recent guests came to Mrs. Roberta Smith’s and Mrs. Debora Luckinbill’s cooking elective. Representatives of Sierra College spoke on a consumer purchasing, and P.G.E. sent a representative to speak on saving electricity. Mrs. Nancy Evans’ fourth graders are very pleased about their recent tour of the Nevada City Museum. They viewed such things as a real altar from an old Joss House in Grass Valley, ‘the first car in Grass Valley,
Indian baskets and other artifacts. They even got to try anold pump organ and typewriter. _ They also went to see the gold FREEDOM SHARES ELMER STOON local Girl Scouts concert tonight and quartz exhibit atthe Bank of America, then returned to school via the Tribulation Trail. ‘Round the halls at the Hills-Ed Connolly’s fourth aders are making mural maps of the trails to California and the Northwest in the 1800’s. They are also doing creative writing about magic animalsand things. Steve Belch’s fifth grade saw a film about the American flag and how-it has changed during our nation’s history. Students then selected two similar flags of other countries to draw. Mrs. Smith’s eighth graders enjoyed making advertising kites in many colors..Mrs. Dorothy Adams’ class is nursing silkworm caterpillars ‘ on mulberry leaves. They are expected to make cocoons and spin silk. Mrs. Margaret Simpson’s students drew seals of the Presidents..Susan Nadin is chairman of the miniature solar system Ken Arbaugh is assembling in social studies. Carolyn Dobbs is published Special education teacher, Mary Carolyn Dobbs, is a contributor to “Instructor,” a national publication for elementary teachers and educators. Mrs. Dobbs’ article appears in the May issue. She describes an activity whereby her special education class, at Lyman Gilmore, wrote to schools throughout the country asking ‘for local items. In return the students sent sugar pine cones and other local objects.
