The Quality
‘Of Being Hip.
Only a handful of hippies are
camping north of Nevada City
at the moment but the interest
they have created is far out of
proportion to their number, The
Blue Tent Road: was busy with
sightseers over the weekend as
hundreds of local citizens drove
up to the cave to get a look,
Actually, the hippies have.
moved out of the cave and into
a cabin loaned to them by Mr.

cleaned by the hippies, mostly
due to the efforts of Julie
Cooper, 2.24 year old brunette,
‘ originally from Tennessee and
a California resident for 13
years, Unlike their sensationalized. newspaper reputation,
Julie showed all the ordinary
womanly concern over her ap=pearance when interrupted at
her housework, Naturally slim
and attractive, Miss Cooper
wore a sweater and white Levis,
Her black, soft leather boots
were distinctively "hip" but her
long hair was clean and well
brushed, She wore a bead and
brass necklace, typical of the
work done by the artisans, craftsmen and artists that she hopes
will join them this summer,
Miss Cooper came to Nevada
County for the same reason that
many people moveto the mountains; to escape the city, One
of her primary concerns is that
the movement will grow too
fast, She wishes that fewer-people would stop by because there
hasn*t been enough time to
get settled,
Another occupant of the cabin is 21 year old "Tara", a
name she prefers to her own,
Tara was uncommunicative at
first, "If you're a writer-you
should know how it is", she
said, She wore corduroy pants
and the sametype of soft leather boots as Julie and added a
leather headband that gave her
dark blonde hair an. appealing
Indian-like appearance,
Sean Kent is the leader of the
group in residence, He was busy
winding up the details of a hot
dog roast held that afternoon
and was unavailable for an interview, but in appearance he
is the most typical of what the
public has been led to believe
a hippie should look like, Fully
bearded and mustached, long
hair uncombed, he wears a
green cape and the ever present
boots, He refers to others in his
group as “brothers” and "sisters".
Brotherhood and love are foremost precepts in the hippie
community,
A local man who visited the
cave last Thursday and is still
there described the experience
as “beautiful”, a word that is
heard often in their company,
One of the not so surprising
things that has happened is that
several local people that have
dropped by the cave to “tell"
the hippies a thing or two have
been converted instead, Others
have donated furniture, food
and help, :
The hippie movement in Nevada County may never grow
beyond these small beginnings
or it may swell this summer
with the coming of good weather, No matter which, the community seems determined to
watch its progress with interest,
Mrs, Donna Young aboard one
of the horses at the Boot Knoll
Ranch posed for this picture to
help ‘publicize the "Teen Fair”,
One feature of the fair will be
a horse show. For details see

Hippie Comment
SOUND & FURY
So much interest has been
shown in the hippies that have
come. to Nevada County that
the Nugget has decided to reprint here the reactions of a
cross. section of letters. and
comments it has received in
the past week,
Sherriff Wayne Brown:
"There is no law against
them being here but we must
enforce the law, If we catch
them breaking the law. we'll
act,”
District Attorney Harold
Berliner:
“They have to obey the law
like anyone else, They were
cautioned tosee that no minors
become involved in their activities, "
California State Park Ranger
Eric Leffingwell:
“The hippies are not camped
within the park. There is a
charge of one dollar per day
per car inside the park and not
enough campsifes to accommodate any large number of
hippies, They are welcome inside the park as long as they
obey the rules and regulations
laid down for park use, "
Mrs, August Ebbert (who has
loaned a cabin to the hippies)
Mrs, Ebbert and her husband
have 13 children and 39 grandchildren between them they
feel they know young people,
One reason they loaned the
cabin is that it is better occupied than left vacant, Another
is that they feel the hippies
deserve a chance, "They want
to do things, ” continued Mrs,
Ebbert, "They want to provide
a place for young people whose
parents don't care for them
where they can work, They
deserve a chance, "
Fred Anderson, local businessman;
Mr, Anderson has loaned the
use of 80 acres to the hippies.
Contrary to current stories the
hippies have no ‘contract, they
ot build anent struc~easep and. thelp-emanbile. ix iin
‘land, People have been camping on the acreage for. some
ten years without comment,
Picnic tables and barbecue pits
have been provided by Mr.
Anderson for everyone's use,
Mr, Anderson continued, "As
long as they abide by the law
and behave themselves it's all
door theater, Actually, some
of them have been filing mining claims in the area for
some time, "
Dear Editor and Nevada City
Residents:
As a long time resident of the
Bay Area, I commend you for
opening your arms to our plague
of Hippies with their LSD, marijuana, disease, filth and stink
eee. not mentioning robberies
and other vices,
Black or white, I hope you
like them all and that their
stay in Nevada City will be a
very long one and once again
our wonderful City of San
Francisco canbe asit once was
with our young children safe on
the streets again,
An ever so grateful,

Editor
The Nugget
Let us be grateful that the
Hippies feel the need of open
spaces and being close to nature and wiil be among us,
There can be a real: dialogue
and acontribution by our com=munity to the re-direction of
their abilities which they have
not been able to find in urban
centers, We should form a
Digger group todiscourage use
of drugs and alcohol, to help
clothe and feed them if necessary, Peace be with them and
all the world! :
