Can Nevada County TurnBack the Clock?
You say we should goback 30 years and attempt torecapture the
good life!1937, the mines are operating and the local economy is
stronger than most of the country, Transportation and communications are limited. The world's problems do not arouse local
concern, (History shows this alone was pure disaster, ) Over 50% of
today's necessities, in use in the average Nevada County home,
were not available in 1937. The fields’ of medicine, education
and engineering, to name a few, have made tremendous advances
in the last 30 years, What is it then that is so worth recapturing
from the past? We must keep in mind that our memories tend to
blot out the ugly and the unpleasant, If you have any doubt, then
listen sometime when men are reminiscing about World War II
days, Today we make these experiences sound exciting, advent~
urous and even humorous, when in reality World War II days were
cruel, tense and solemn.
The conclusion we must draw is that whatever today is, we've
made it so, We can't avoid the present even if we wanted to and
I for one am thankful there are people who are willing to struggle
with the complex problems that Nevada County 1967 will face, It
takes real intestinal fortitude to say, "I'm as much to blame for
Nevada County's: problems as the next person and . intend to do
my part to help solve them," You need this kind of neighbor,
And, strangely enough, age tenure in the county and sex seem_ to
have little bearing on this trait, Most people who talk about the
"good ole days” didn't even live here in the “good ole days",
Regardless of whether or not we're better off today than 30 years
ago, we cando something about tomorrow! You say, we all agree,
Well, then, where do we start? It’s obvious! We start by taking
an interest in the affairs of the community; by becoming knowledgeable about the issues’ at hand and by demonstrating a willingness to help and a determination that hip-pocket politics will not
be tolerated,
I plan to explore this latter point more fully in subsequent issues,
It will suffice for now to say that my first 4 months in office have
given me acertain confidence that most people and procedures of
local government are well meaning, community minded, and
capable, However, there are some things that happen which you
just wouldn't believe; Pressure is applied and deals are made,
We must have good people in local government, both in elected
and appointed positions, We must have people who want to serve
their community, We must have people who can resist pressure
and temptation, We must have people who are willing to learn
from others and to listen to all sides, We must have people who
are willing and able tolook into the future andplan for an orderly
tomorrow, We must have people who are willing and ableto
attack the big problems instead of the minutia,
It is my responsibility as a Supervisor to see that all major
County appointments are made with this criteria in mind, And in
the final analysis it is you, the voter, who is responsible, By your
action at the polls you can determine the type of government and
the type of community we will have in 1967 and the years tocome,
