PEARDALE-CHICAGO by HOUSTON SPIRES RT. #2 BOX 1911 GRASS VALLEY 273-7859 Almost everyone in Nevada County is talking about the "Hippie Invasion", Newspapers and television coverage have certainly made us the center of attraction, Through personal interviews I have talked with over 221 people this past week and only four were in favor of having the “Hippies” anywhere around, Almost all the people interviewed asked these questions: What will happen next? How many of the Haight-Ashbury crowd will move into this community? If these non-conformists are allowed to stay, will our diminishing economy decline even further? If rumors are true, and some 20,000 (sic) of these bearded "Beatnicks” move into this county and are allowed to stay, someone had better look out should they decide to vote, This county with a small population could possibly have its whole political system taken over by this many people with a sheer force of votes, No one wants to gamble on the effects of a "Hippy" government, although some say it might be an improvement, The Hippies plan to live off the land and make sandals and novelties to sell to the public, The Planning Commission in this county seems to oppose most businesses that would take the burden off of our own unemployment, Is this what they have in mind for this county's future? Will the "Hippies" be allowed to do what their proclamation says they can, without breaking the law? What kind of people would donate land and building materials to a group like this so they can come in contact with our children and families, or is there a more sinister motive behind it? The "Hippies" are well known for the kind of things they have done in other places! Why should they suddenly change their ways? Why should “WE” in Nevada County give sanctuary to a group. of people who reject society? It could be that we need more up-to-date County LAWS! Ida Vogt, the mother of Bill Vogt, was lately the victim of a stroke. She was treated at the Nevada General Hospital. Ida has been a member of a Rebecca Lodge. Frank Moore has a permit toconstruct a trailer park near his home on Spencerville Road. The only factor that is delaying the “ground breaking" is this unséasonally wet weather. I do not believe that this trailer park-to-be would become a serious and direct competitor to the existing trailer ranch on the Marysville highway. The reason is that only retired senior citizens would be allowed to occupy spaces on the Moore property. Mrs.Fern Harrison is away visiting her daughter, "Fern", who moved to Oklahoma near the turn of the year. At the P.V. Community Church an informal Men's Fellowship and potluck supper was held on the evening of April 27. A short business meeting was "sandwiched" in between supper and the time allowed for the guest speakers, -who had been serving the now dissolvedCalifornia Youth Authority camp at Smartsville. Mr. Arlie Tripp, who served this camp for at least ten years, was the principal speaker at this meeting, and his sermonette centered around love toward our fellow men. By the way, those boys at Smartsville are to be transferred to the Washington Ridge camp. A brief discussion developed, :impromptu-style, about some "Hippies" living in caves near Bloomfield. Mr.Earl Jacobson brought his six-string guitar and played three Latin tunes on it. Another gentleman stood up to speak tothe group there but a serious charliehorse cramp in one of his legs sent him painfully back tohis chair. keaekkekRekk During nights of the week of April 23 "Open House" was held at the Ready Springs School. kak kk kk ERK Maurice and "Olie" Wilcox of Indian Springs Road are expecting their daughter and son-inlaw to visit them from April 28 through 30. Their daughter didnot have to change her name after marriage. Her husband's name is Donald Wilcox, whose parents own the Meteor Ranch located at the upper end of Clear Lake over in Lake County. This good-looking pair have three children, Michael, Marilyn and Marcie.
