Black Bart Welding & Machine Shop
Gold Flat
Blacksmith
"Under the spreading chestnut tree, the Village smithy
stands..'' remember that old
classic we all had to memorize
as school children years ago?
The only real blacksmith's
shop in this area .. thenearest
comparable establishment is in
Marysville .. is Black Bart
Welding & Machine Shop, out on
Gold Flat Road a few blocks
from downtown Nevada City.
Smokey and Alta Smith are its
owners, and it is a totally facinating place to visit.
Smokey established the business in 1961 over in Hill's
Flat and later converted the old
poultry processing plant on Gold
Flat to serve his specific needs,
Smith's late father was ahard
rock miner, steam hoist engineer and a respected blacksmith.
.and his interest in the latter
occupation has been transmitted
to his son. Smokey worked as a
machinest, field engineer, plant
superintendent and crop duster
before going into business for
himself in 1961. ;
At Black Bart Welding, one
finds machinery capable of measurements down to 2/10ths of a
thousandth of an inch .. andthe
manufacture of gold mining machinery weighing up to 25 tons
or more such as was ordered
not too long ago by an ATizona iswu#
mining firm.
The oldest piece of equipment
in the shop .. in continuous
use .. is the forge and blower,
with its "duck's nest'' in its
original shape. Now more than 70
years old .. the forge was first
manually operated. It is now
powered by electricity.
Many items of light mining
equipment are manufactured in
the local plant .. some of which
are Smokey's own patented inventions and much in demand,
Other equipment in daily use
include a sophisticated machine
used to cut internal and external
"envelope slots" in safe doors;
and one gadget most in use
daily is a power cut off saw..
capable of an amazing variety
of jobs required in handling iron
pipe and angle iron work,
Only the finest materials procurable are used in creating
machinery or effecting repairs
ky,
THE OWNER of Black Bart's is Smokey Smith (right) who talks to shop foreman, Les Alstot.
ordered by the firm's long list
of satisfied clients. Portable
equipment is also on hand for
field welding jobs .. another
shop specialty .. and no job is
too small or too large for shop
personnel to tackle,
There is an artistic sidetoall
that goes on out there .. in
the creation of special tools
wrought from various metals;
wrought iron railings, fences
and handsome sets which anyone
with a fireplace would just love
to own! These sets, depending
upon the number of pieces involved, range in price from about
$40 to more than $160. . .depending upon the needs and tastes
of the individual customer.
The profession of blacksmithing is not in as great demand today as in past eras..
but Smokey and his staff can
handle any such problem in a
professional manner. Les Allstot is the shop foreman and
Bill Gwinn the machinest ..
both highly competent and efficient craftsmen in their trades,
Smokey and Alta have two
children; their son, Wayne E,
Smith, is with the PG&E in
Grass Valley .. he and his
wife are the parents of three
fine young sons, Daughter, Linda
McEllenon and her husband reside in Nevada, and are the parents of a beautiful little girl.
Alta has a fabulous artistic
talent which she puts to work in
what she terms "shop art"..
the creation of stunning pictures
made of the by-products of the
machine shop .. those fantastic
curliqued shavings and trimmings from various kinds of
metal, which she mounts on varicolored velvets and frames ap~
propriately. But this is, indeed,
a story for another time, since
we have just run out of space
.e. See!
