North San Juan News Draft boa By Idabel Covert — The most memorable thing that happened in North San Juan last weekend was an annoyance that has become fairly regular recently, Telephone service was out again. It-weems to happen mostly on weekends, For the rates we pay, I think we’re entitled to better service. I also think direct dialing, at least to Nevada City and Grass Valley, is not too much to ask for in this day and age. Rural resijents orobably depend on their telephones more than any other group, and when an emergency arises, as it does frequently, a dead phone is too much, And trying to get out a news column without a phone is ridiculous, but I’1l try, Dear Cecile Wilson has returned from her annual Southern California stay, and found her house completely redecorated and refurnished, courtesy of her daughter Edith Haverty. Now that she’s back, we can all breathe easier . She Stays away too long. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Gene Stuart over the weekend were Mr, and Mrs, Jim Baker of Fair Oaks, and their family. Opening of fishing season was the occasion. The men of the group hiked down to the river to a spot known only to Gene Stuart, I guess, and came back with ‘limits of trout. It takes a dedicated fisherman with plenty of physical stamina to go down into some of those rugged canyons just to catch fish. Then there is the return trip, straight up. My admiration knows no bounds. I know that some of our local people attended the Penn Valley GV Elks win ritual contest The ritualistic team of Grass Valley Lodge No. 538, B, P.O. Elks, won the North Central District championship yesterday in Sacramento. Placerville Lodge was second and Nevada City Lodge third in the 14-lodge contest. The local team also won four individual first places and three seconds, The first place winners were Ben Swartz, exalted ruler; Leon Ferguson, lecturing knight; Verle Mcintosh, chaplain; and Clarence Bennett, inner guard. The victory qualifies the Grass Valley team for the state contest the week of May 15 at the California Elks Convention in San Diego. Rodeo, and I know that Calvin Milhous took horses down, but that is all I know, due to that pesky telephone. If any awards were won I’ll report on that next week. Since I seem to be complaining a lot today, I might as well take up another matter that bothers me to noend, Every spring, county crews go up and down our roadways spraying something lethal on the vegetation bordering same. Then they go away, and the stuff dies. This is okay, and I understand to some extent their reasons for getting rid of it. But they never come back to clear away the dead brush, There it is, just waiting for some careless wayfarer to toss away a lit cigarette, and start a holocaust. That beautiful nuisance, scotch broom, is known to be a fire hazard even while green. Standing gray and dead by the roadside, it is definitely an invitation to disaster. And this is going to be a dry year, too. Young men who have reached or are nearing 18 are advised by Local Board 16, Selective Service System of the new registration procedures for the draft.
Under the new provisions, a registrant must register with a draft board or a draft registrar within the period 30 days before to 30 days after his 18th birthday. He must bring some official type of identification with him when he registers, such as his birth certificate, Social Security Account Number card, drivers license, school or college activity card, or a credit card. Registration will consist of filling out a registration card, and additionally a registration questionnaire. The new registration questionnaire requires the names and addresses of three persons outside the registrant's immediate family who will always know his address. The names, relationships and addresses of all the registrant's family over age 16 also must be listed. The form includes questions inquiring whether the registrant believes he qualifies for a deferment or exemption. Each registrant must list a place of permanent residence, as well as a current mailing address. The draft board serv-ing his permanent residence will be the registrant's permanent draft board, regardless of where he registers. All new registrants are placed administratively into a holding classification, Class 1-H. Practically all new registrants will remain in Class 1-H until after their lottery drawing which will be held early in the calendar year in which they reach age 19, Those who receive low lottery numbers will then be considered for classification out of Class 1-H.
