4 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, May 3, 1972
When it's springtime in Penn
Valley, everything is astir with
the excitement of the big event
for April, which is the Rodeo.
There was much activity and
preparation for the big day.
Sunday dawned clear and bright,
the barbecue had been buried
in the pit the night before and
was ready for the crowd. I
heard that over 150 pies were
donated to the dinner menu,
There was a capacity crowd
of over four thousand people which exceeded the
number of the previous year.
I did not get to see the rodeo
as I worked in the food booth,
but judging from the cheers of
the crowd, it was a good one.
The food line was a continuous
seven hours long according to
my calculations, the people just
kept coming and coming for the
barbecue, First the barbecue
dinner was served, then came
the barbecue sandwiches, the
hot dogs and beans, and the pie.
I know that there was not one
bite of food left. People came
from far and near, I heard
the. names of some _ distant
places, such as_ Alturas,
Oroville, Los Angeles to game
a few. One. woman said she
her family were just driving
through, saw the excitement and
decided to stay for the day. I
think for all who attended, it
was a day well spent. The Penn
Valley Fire Department and
Auxillary deserve a great big
applause for a job well done!

The B. H. Nix home was a
beehive of activity this past
weekend with all the kids home
from college for the weekend.
The kids all seem to congregate at the Nix home which
I think is great and so do the
Nix's. With three teenagers
coming and going, they don't
have much choice. They get my
vote for good people!

New system
on renewal of
driver license
Sixty days before their
drivers’ licenses expire, California motorists will receive
“time to renew’’ notices in the
mail, Director of Motor
Vehicles Robert C. Cozens said
today that, following a two-month
shakedown in Sacramento county, beginning next Monday, the
DMV will start issuing the
reminders routinely on a statewide basis.
The notices are made possible
by the DMV computer’s ability
to pick out drivers with specific
birthdays on which their
licenses expire. They are not
only a convenient reminder to
those who might forget to renew on time (about seven per
cent) they will also save a
quarter milliondollars annually,
A person coming into a DMV
office to renew his driver’s
license brings the renewal notice with him. Instead of filling
out a long questionnaire, he takes
it directly to the driver licensing
counter, It already bears identifying information based on his
existing DMV record. He is asked
to indicate any changes (most
likely: address, height, weight,
marital status), With these noted,
the form is ready for processing, having saved several
minutes of the applicant’s and
the clerk’s time.
‘‘We are confident the new
system will work,’’ Cozens said.
‘‘We are breaking it in to test
for any rough spots. Then, beginning in July 1972, all California drivers will start getting
the reminder.’’

Fishing season opened on 4
lovely day, Saturday, April 28.
It was a little cold for the early
morning fishermen, but as the
sun got higher in the sky, it
got warmer.
It seems to me the opening
of fishing season in the past
has always brought rain or even
snow. There are always a lot
of people who come to Washing
ton every year on the first weekend, and I guess they were all
here, There are a lot of cars
on the road along the river.
Our visit by Supervisor Willie
Curran last week has been benificial tothe community. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Curran ran
into Howard Swearingen, manager of Pacific Gas and Electric
at the court house; he mentioned
to him that one of the street
lights in Washington was not
coming on with the others. This
had been reported tothe P,G,&E,
office twice before with noaction
taken. On Wed. a P.G,&E, crew
was out to fix the light, Mr.
Curran alsd reports that he is
investigating the possibility of
the county helping the Washington District Counsil with the
problem of providing public
rest rooms in Washington.
President Joan Baker, of the
Washington District Counsil, ree
quested maps showing all county
maintained roads in our area,
Mr. Curran sent them to her.
There is a new bulletin board
in the middle of town, While
digging post holes for the placement of the board next to the
post office, the men dug up an
old wagonspring about 25
feet underground. I wonder how
long it had been there?
The bulletin board is for public use, anyone with a proper
notice to post is welcome to
use it.
I have been told by many that
they have items for the next
Fire Dept. rummage sale. At
this time I have no place to
store the things so I had to
tell them I can’t take their
items at this time. If anyone
in the Washington area knows
of any place where some things
can be stored for a month or
so, please ‘let me know, Otherwise I cannot accept the nice
things people offer.

SACRAMENTO-Although there is still better than a month
to go before the big, three-day Memorial Day weekend, anyone
~ planning on camping at a State Park campground, particularly
one along the southern or central coast, had better check in
with the nearest Ticketron terminal and get his reservation
made right away.
This word of advice comes from State Parks Director
William Penn Mott, Jr., who explains that many of the popular
coastal campgrounds and a few of the inland ones have already
been spoken for by advance reservations, and those that aren't
are filling fast.
"In fact," Mott added, "these same parks are already
beginning to fill up for the second big summer holiday, the
Fourth of July weekend. Your best bet, if the state park of
your choice is filled, is to try inland parks and those along the
north coast."
State park campgrounds in the southern California area
already filled for the Memorial Day weekend by advance reservations include South Carlsbad, San Flijo, Doheny, San
Clemente, Leo Carrillo, El Capitan, Carpinteria, McGrath,
and Pismo State Beaches; and Palomar Mountain, Cuyamaca
Rancho, Gaviota, Mount San Jacinto Wilderness, Point Mugu,
and Morro Bay State Parks,
In the central California area, state park campgrounds
already booked include Seacliff, New Brighton, and Sunset State
Beaches; Henry Cowell Fedwoods, Big Basin Redwoods, Pfeiffer
Big Sur, and Portola State Farks; and Millerton Lake and McConnell State Recreation Areas.
And those state parks more accessible to northern California
residents that are already filled for Memorial Day weekend
include Sonoma Coast State Beach; MacKerricher, Clear Lake,
Calaveras Big Trees, Samuel P. Taylor, and Bothe-Napa Valley
State Parks; and Lake Oroville State Recreation Area.
Reservations for state park campgrounds may be made up
to 90 days in advance, or as early as a Monday for the following
weekend, at any of the 160 Ticketron terminal outlets located
in stores or businesses throughout the state.
To learn the location of the terminal nearest you, call
(213) 878-2211 in Los Angeles; (714) 427-5133 in San Diego;
(415) 692-2921 in San Francisco; and (916) 445-8828 in Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO--Summer, which means boating, swimming,
fishing, hiking, and picnicking to millions of Californians, is
just around the corner, and if you haven't already done so, you
will want to pick up an annual day-use permit and a boatlaunching permit for units of the State Park System.
The permits sell for $10 each and are good until the end
of 1972. They offer unlimited use of day-use and boat-launching
facilities at most state park units,
The day-use permit may be used anytime at any stateoperated park where the regular daily $1 parking and day-use
fee or 25 cent walk-in fee is charged. It is not good, however,
for camping or boat launching, at state parks operated by an
agency other than the state, or a state historic parks, monuments, or museums where a separate entrance or tour fee is
charged.
The boat-launching permit may be used anytime at any
state park boat-launching facility in lieu of the regular $1
boat-launching fee. This includes boat-launching facilities operated by concessioners, except for those at Lake Elsinore State
Recreation Area in Riverside County.
The permits are available at most state parks, or can be
purchased by visiting or sending a $10 check or money order
for each permit wanted to the Reservation Cffice, State Department of Parks and Recreation, 1416 Ninth Street, Sacramento, 95814.

SACRAMENTO--The State Department of Parks and Recreation today announced what appears to be an important
archeological find at Fort Ross State Historic Park in Sonoma
County. The discovery was made during exploratory excavations along the new right-of-way of State Highway 1, which
is being relocated around the historic Fort.
Department archeologists under the supervision of William
E, Pritchard have uncovered what may be an early Russian
structure, and a grave containing the possible~remains of a
Russian colonist. The find dates to the period of the original
Russian settlement there in 1812,
A physical anthropologist from the University of California,
a member of the Department's archeological staff,.is on his
way to the site to investigate the remains to determine origin,
sex, age, and possible cause of death.
On Saturday, April 29, at 10 a.m. Metropolitan Vladimir,
Arch Bishop of the Russian Orthodox faith in San Francisco,
will visit the site.
Deputy Director John F. Maloney of the Department of
Public Works, which is funding the archeological project at
the Fort, said that his department will make additional funds
available to extend the exploration there.
He said plans for the highway construction will be amended
if further archeological work shows this to be necessary.
