May 39 1973 Noreen Jones is winner NOREEN JONES, Nevada Union High School art Student, won first prize for this pipestone form in the Stanley Surform sculpturing contest. Miss Jones won $125 and was one of four winners at the high school level. John Richardson of NU is her instructor. Stanley Tools of New Britain, Conn. sponsored the contest at schools all across the country. Three of the four winners in California. among high schools were FFA students receive awards Forty-two Future Farmersfrom eight high schools in the Marysville Yuba City district received awards at a recent banquet. Bank of America and the State Bureau of Agriculture Education sponor the competition and Neal Hammond, assistant vice president of the North Mountain Region District Administration, was the guest speaker. The men cooked, giving all the women a free Mother’s Day breakfast. At the May meeting Ed Crane of Pioneer Travel showed slides entitled ‘‘Alaska Inland Passage.”’ The Associate Director of the GSMOL Region No. 11, Mrs. Lorraine Lentz, of the Mountain Air Chapter No. 260, was a guest along with other members of the Mountain Air Chapter. A discussion was conducted on whether to hold meetings during the summer. It was decided to hold no meeting in June, July or August. President George Zirkle discussed the article on the front page of the Californian entitled the ‘‘Landlord Tenant Bill.” It is supported by the GSMOL. The chapter will hold its next meeting on the second Tuesday in September. DON TERRILL of the Grass Valley Police Depar‘tment was honored by the Grass Valley Rotary Club as the employe of the month during May. :Terrill received ,a $25 bond from the Rotary Club. K Camptonville News CAMPTONVILLE, May 21.*~ Mr. and Mrs. Louie Smith, and party, of Marysville were in town Saturday; he formerly taught school here. David Anderson and Anita Witte of Madison, Wisconsin, were in town for a brief visit Saturday. A surprise birthday party for Mrs. Bonnie Rist was given by Skip Schaeffer at the Camptonville store. A large crowd of relatives and friends attended. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Current and family of John Day, Oregon, were here over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E Hanson returned from a few days visit to their former home and relatives at Roseville. Perry and Mike Wallace of Redding were visitors here over the weekend. Judge Acton M. Cleveland made a trip to Gridley, Thursday, on assignment in the Judicial District Court there. Abel and Coral Coreta of San Blas, Nagarid, Mexico, were visitors in.town Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Earle W. Davis and sons of Castro Valley spent the weekend at their summer home here. Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Hudson of Alameda were in town Saturday. ‘ Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Rogers have returned from a week’s ‘ visit with relatives in San Bernardino and Arizona; taking a tour of Boulder Dam on‘ their Way. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Smith and daughter Susan of Redwood City, were in town over the past weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hughes are spending a furlough with his Two drownings reported parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hughes. He is stationed with the U. S. Marines at San Diego. Francis (Skip) Schaeffer and Floyd Pearson made a brief visit to Alleghany and North Bloomfield last week. Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Cassano and family, of Sacramento, were in town Saturday on a brief visit to his old home. CAMPTONVILLE, May 26. Mr. and Mrs. Owen Edwards of San Francisco were in town Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Thompson of Napa were visitors here Tuesday. aes Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Rogers made a brief visit to Santa Rosa Monday. His cousin, Noble Rogers, is seriously ill in a hospital at that place. Mr. and Mrs. Donald R. Mason and fmily of Anchorage, Alaska, were in town on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. William Wales and Mr. and Mrs. Roland S. Phebus have recently taken over the Chestnut Cafe from Callison Morton and May Kendall. Barney Bocksen of Bergen, Norway, was in town this week on his vacation. Judge and Mrs. Acton M. Cleveland were in Sacramento Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lindberg of Richvale were in town this week. : William Minnick of Placerville who resided here during construction of Bullards Bar Dam, was in town Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. L. Switzer of Vallejo were in town Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Everett, and son, who have resided here for the past few years have moved to Carmichael where he will attend college. Mr. and Mrs. Tom McMillan of San Jose were visitors in town this past week. in river raft mishaps Two young men drowned in local rivers over the busy Memorial Day weekend, after falling from a raft. & John William McLeod Jr., 22, of Sacramento, was rafting with a friend on the South Yuba River, according to Undersheriff Frank Gallino. The raft went over the waterfall and both men fell off, McLeod did not surface but the friend was able to swim to shroe. Some people on the rocks below the fall saw a man’s body floating by and become loged in rocks. They pulled him out and tried artificial respiration but to no avail. A passerby with a radio called the sheriff’s office and the Nevada City rescue car was dispatched. The rescue squad also tried artificial respiration before taking young McLeod to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Billy James Little, 26, of Grass Valley was with two other friends on a six-man raft late Friday night and early Saturday morning on Bear River below Rollins Dam. The raft capsized about on-half mile below the Colfax bridge with the two friends but not Little surfacing. Placer county sent out search parties, Nevada county sheriff’s office also have been searching q along with members of the 4 ° Wheelers’ Club but as of this morning Little has not been found. The raft was found about 200 yards below where it capsized. A helicopter from Placer county has flown over the area repeatedly but have found no sign of Little. Mr. McLeod, son of Mrs. Beverly James of Nevada City and John W. McLeod Sr. of Ukiah, is a former resident of Nevada City. He is a Nevada Union High School graduate and a construction worker. In addition to his parents he leaves a daughter, Heather of Ukiah; a brother, Ray and a sister, Katherine Mallette, both of Sacramento.
