~The real estate business in
the Golden State and elsewhere
in the USA has steadily moved
towards its high level professional status over the years,
Now more than -60 leading
American universities and colleges offer full four-year courses; some 250 other institutions
of higher learning offer at least
one allied course of stidy. .
and there are now approximately 600,000 persons in these
United States who are licensed
as real estate brokers or salesmen,
Among these is Thomas (Tom)
Coleman of Terra Alta Real Estate at 211 Broad Street (National Hotel Building) in Nevada
City. Tom, at 34, is said to
be the "youngest real estate
broker in Nevada County.”
He is the sole owner of the
firm, and was licensed as a
broker in Dlinois when he was
just 21. Prior to founding the
local firm three years ago, Colemen was a real estate appraiser
for the PG&E in San Francisco;
and had spent two years as a
construction surveyor in Alaska
with the U.S. Army. He has no
affiliation with any other firm
of similar name elsewhere.
His staff includes Art Williams, formerly of Sacramento,
who has 14 years in sales and
was a contractor~ previously;
Jack Balcom, whose real estate
experience spans 11 years; and
the newest member of the staff,
Gene Baroni, who has been with
the firm for two years, Balcom
and Broni are both from Richmond, where they had earlier
served with the City police department for a number of years.

Terra Alta Real Estate
handles all phases of the
complex business. . .such as
a property exchange recently
consumated between parties in
Nevada County with opposite
numbers in Arizona, . .all by
mail. Now in the works is a
similar deal between parties in
this area and others in Los
Angeles,
Based on the premise of "no
performance no pay,'' Tom
says that about 95 percent of
the services rendered by a broker and staff are absolutely
free. In the process of buying
or selling real estate, "we can
talk to ten persons and sell to
the 1lth prospect in many
cases,"" And, very long hours
are often involved. . .a recent
transaction of record started at
7 a.m. one day and was closed
at 6 a.m. the next. . .between
a local seller and a San Francisco buyer.
Coleman says that his staff
is trained to replace him on
occasions when he may not be
immediately available. As head
of the firm, his is primarily
an advisory and supervisory capacity. Expansion of facilities
to include a branch office is in
the planning stage; and will, of
course, require a larger staff
to handle requirements of buyers
and sellers, according to Coleman,
Tom and his wife, Jodie, are
the parents of a son and daughter, Clark is six and Clarrissa,
who is three. The children share
the same birth date April 9.
When time permits, Tom enjoys water skiing and trout fishing. Jodie is a devoted mother
and excellent homekeeper. Tom
has just been elected president of
the Nevada City Chamber of
Commerce for the 1972-73 term,
He is an officer in the Nevada
City Elks Lodge No. 518; a
director on the Nevada County
Real Estate Board; and is a
member of the Grass ValleyNevada City Kiwanis Club, Jodie
is a past director of the Gold
Dancers; and Tom is a director
in the "Mr. and Mrs" Dance
Club.
Art Williams and his wife,
Bettye, are the parents of seven
children; Gene and Lou Baroni
have two daughters and a son;
Jack and Florence Balcom (she
works at Alpha Hardware) have
