City and Grass Valley was commemorated Saturday by E Clampus Vitus, William Bull Meek William Morris Stewart Chapter. The bronze plaque was placed on the old Bank of America building, the. northernmost. terminus .of. the. Nevada.. + trolley are (left to right) Jim Emmons, builder of the scale model trolley which ran along a 20-foot track along Broad Street on Saturday; Roy Stauffer, Bob : Paine, Elza Kilroy, Tom: Motter .and.Hal-Goodyear.: ‘ . Pelton Wheel dedication set for Saturday . A commemorative plaque will be placed at the Pelton Wheel Mining Museum. at a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Arthur D. Wint Foote, a civil engineer, was brought to Grass Valley in. 1895 to design and construct an electrical generating plant and for the supply Of water on the premises of the Empire Co, The first Pelton wheel was 18 feet 6 inches in diameter and was replaced in 1896 by tho Pelton wheel now standing at the museym, which is 30 feet it diameter. It is constructed entirely of steel except the hub, = Which is of cast iron and the buckets. were made of bronze, Some of the buckets have had to be replaced and are made of cast iron. This is a local historical landmark and the museum is filled with mining artifacts, most of which were donated by Arthur Dowdell, a long time employe of the Empire Mine. On July-22, 1896, A. D, Foote was named superintendent of the North Star Mining Co, and remained in that position until tts closing of the mine by a government order. Lone grave : spring gets renovation The Grass Valley 4-Wheei Drive Club recently completed a conservation work project at the Lone Grave approximately “seven miles east of Nevada City “on Highway 20, The project involved the renovation of the spring at the gravesite by constructing two redwood spring boxes, laying 140 feet of pipeline and building . a mortared rock retaining wall, . slab and fountain, The fountain is constructed in such a ‘manner as to provide for easy filling 4 Of containers or for drinking fountain style. es The project’ was’ done in cooperation with the Nevada City Rotary Club which furnished the needed materials. A. total of 80 man hours were spent by the _ 4-wheelers .to.complete:the: job, --
