Topica,
DELIVER US FROM RICHES.
“Great possessions may bring great misfortunes.” The wise man is sometimes correct.
Only six months ago aman in Obio was left
a fortune of $700,000 by the death ‘of his
father. And already his brothers, sisters and
cousins have g me into court and: proved that
‘the inan’s father had three wives at one time,
that he died head and ears in debt to all his
relatives, that his fortune was dishonestly obtained and that he was a defaulter to the
government, that he had been violently insane at several periods of his life and was in a
condition of hopeless imbecility at the time’ he
niade thisgwill, that the man forged this will
any how, and that he was not able to take
care of such a property in any case, being
himself little better than an idiot. He has
still a little of the money left, but he leaves it
out on the doorstep every night, in the hope
that somebody will come along and steal it.
THE WEAK POINT IN THE EVIDENCE.
“At five minutes of. 11 o’clock, on the 11th
of June, I shail drop dead,” said Charles Kirtland,:of Piqua, Ohio, eleven years ago, And
at five minutes to 11 o’clock on the morning
of June 11, 1887, a baker’s wagon ran over
Charles and broke his leg. “Drop bread,”
‘was what Charles meant to say when. he
struck out in the prophecy business.
HEAVEN LOVES THE HEATHEN.
Favored above all lands are the Isles of
Sandwich. In their recent war of the rebellion the entire army only numbered 147 men,
so if every soldier under arms, and the sutler
in the tent, writes a magazine history of the
war, the series of war articles can only run
twelve years and four mofiths, And yet
some people believe in a second probation for
the heathen. Not much; they seem to ge’
their heaven here. a
A BEAUTIFUL HEATHEN CUSTOM.
When ‘a Chinaman earnestly presses a
visitor to stay,.to dinner, the visitor is then
aware that he is not wanted;and straightway
he goes home. In America the invitation to
lying heathen; but what puzzles the Christian
is to know just when it means “stay” and
when it means “go.” In some respects the
heathen hold away over us,
THE TRAMP.
Slow paced, with listless step he moved along,
To where the woodbine mantled all the door,
And tossed its restless shadows on the floor;
His idle breath; escaping in a song,
Bore scents of Old Tom Juniper along;
Upon both feet he limped, as travel sore. ©
more;
And lingered yet, the banquet to prolong,
While I felt envy of his bone and brawn,
And his glad life, so free from toil or care;
And did not know, till after he was gone,
That he had taken with him my best pair
Of summer clothes, and other things, to pawn,
And drifted idly off—we knew not where.
Ah, would that I, like him, might come and go,
As birds and winds and shadows go and come,
Careless of all things sad or burdensome}.
Living as idly as fair lilies grow ‘
Beside the dreamy river's slumb'rous flow;
At morn, awakened by the hollow drum
Of partridge in the thicket; by the hum
Of over busy bees at noontime’s glow,
Lulled to my midday slumber in the-wood;

To live with birds and winds in brotherhood,

How a Dying Child
Was Saved !.
Crcrro, Hammtor Co., Inp., Sept, 19, 1837.—
The following is a true account of what your
8. 8. 8. has déne for our little daughter, Hazel,
now four years old. When 12 months old a
lump appeared on her heel, which slowly grew
larger, The family physician thought it was
caused by a piece of broken glass or needle,
but failed ‘to bring anything to light. The
» oltiid became feebler all the time, seeming to
lose the use of her leg, and finally quit walk
ing entirely. The middle finger and thumb
of either hand became enlarged, the flesh becoming hard. The hip joints became involv.
ed, so that when seventeen months old she
could not stand, having lost the use of leg
andarm. Partial curvature of the spine also
followed. The nervous system was wrecked,
muscles contracted, and there was.general
"ommesting of flesh and muscle. At eighteen
months of age-she was placed under the
tr of a prominent physician of Boston, Mass., but at the end of ter months she
had declined to such a degree that she was in
& dying condition. This was {n April, 1836
We took the child away not knowing what
to do. In this dreadful dilemma we were
over-persuaded by friends to try ‘‘one bottle” of Swirt’s Sprctric, which we did, and
before it had all been taken we saw & change
for the better in her symptoms. We kept it
up, and have done so to this day, and will
keep it up, if the Lord wills, for many days
tocome, for it has brought our dying Hazel
to life, to vigor, to strength and health again.
The ashen hue of her cheeks has changed to
arosy tint. She is able to walk anywhere,
her languor and lancholy have p d
away, and she is now a blithe, cheerful, happy romping child. Should you wish to increase your testimonials of proof of the
virtue of 8.8.8., our names and what we
have sald is but a portion of what weowetovou, should you wish to use them. Tit aay
