of commerce, on their arrival in Nevada City Friday. The officials took part in a three-day
Governors Conference held in Nevada City the past weekend. The Nevada County secretaries
hosted the session,

Ladies here on city tour
The Historical and Antique
Section of Tuesday Club of Sacramento will tour antique shops
and points of historical interest
in Nevada City and Grass Valley
on Friday, the 15th. Approximately 44 members of this group
will déave Sacramento by
charteréd.bus at 8:30 a.m, andexpect to: arrive in Nevada City
about 10, >
Upon arrival, the group will
be greeted by: Ruby Nobles, secretary of the Nevada City Chamber-of Commerce, whohas made
arrangements for. the visitation
and a coffee klatch at the Alpha
Hardware Store. The ladies will
then tour the antique shops. At
1 p.m., luncheon will be served
at the historic National Hotel,
and possibly.a home tour will be
conducted during the afternoon

Secretary group
Nevada County dispensed its
special brand of western hospitality the past weekend when
more than 125 legal secretaries
convened in Nevada City for a
governor's conference.
"It's wonderful to be here in
God's country, and there is a
soft spot in my heart for the
Nevada County Legal Secretaries."
These were the words of Betty
Barton, state president, as she
responded at a banquet held Saturday night in the Nevada City
Elks Club rooms.
Superior Court Judge Vernon
Stoll served as master of ceremonies at the banquet.
Letha Twitchell, president of
the local association, introduced
the judge (her boss), who inturn
presented officials.
The Nevada Theater Light
Operato Company furnished entertainment with selections from
"Kiss Me Kate", "My Fair Lady"
"Music Man", and "Annie Get
Your Gun". Opal Hendricks, entertainment chairman, arranged
for the program,
The conference opened Friday
with registration in The National
Hotel, and a president's reception hosted by the Title Insurance and Trust Company, Inter-County Title Company, and
the Nevada County Title Company. ;
Sessions were held Friday and
Saturday afternoons in the hotel
and the Elks club rooms.
A brunch Sunday in Alta.Si~ erra Country. Club concluded
the program, Michelle Mautino
and Patty Jones were on the enagenda for the
brunch. ¥
State officers ,attending included, Bette Barton, president;
Mildred Milkey, first vice president; Ivy W. Person, second vice
president. Betty Lou West, executive secretary;Rena Legge,
“Thornton, national director.Barbara Bennette of Nevada
City and governor for. the local
association was general chairman of.thebanquet and brunch,
Her committee included Totts
Aebersold, Win .Eckola, Mrs.
Twitchell, Opal Hendricks and
Margaret Trivelpiece.
Mrs. Bennette said the visitors were "overwhelmed" with
the warmness of the people of
Grass Valley and Nevada City,
and the beauty and history of the
area. She said most expressed
a desire to return soon.
Chief of Police Jim Moon arranged for parking for -those
attending the conference, Ruby
Nobles of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce and John Gallegos of the Nevada County
Chamber of Commerce extended
greetings. Nevada City and
Grass Valley merchants contributed almost 50 prizes which
were distributed Saturday night
and Sunday morning. ©
The Nevada County Community Workshop donated the
centerpieces and decorations,
and the light opera group gave
of their talents.
The entertainment and decorations both were well received
with many guests purchasing the
decorations, and some joining in
the Liberal Arts Commission
in order to aid in restoration of
the Nevada Theater.

ROSEVILLE Congressman
Harold T. (Bizz) Johnson today
expressed "deep appreciation”
to the voters of the Second
Congressional District including those in Nevada county for
their support at the polls, Representative Johnson was reelected to serve a sixth term in
Congress."Throughout. the 91st Congress," Representative Johnson
said, "I will do everything
humanly possible to live up to
the faith the people of the Second District have placed in me.
My sole responsibiltiy will be
that of service to the people.
I will devote my entire time and
energy to this one obligation.
"I want to stress one thing
today -my offices in Roseville and Washington are your
offices," Congressman Johnson
declared. "They always have
been dedicated-to the service of
all. the people and always will
be,"
Congressman Johnson announced that before he returns .
to Washington for the January
3rd opening of the new Congress,
he will tour the Second District
once more in order to discuss
the issues of the coming Congress and the problems and
needs of the region.
The veteran legislator expressed the hope that those he did
not meet personally on this tour
would write him their thoughts
and comments.
"I want the views of all the
people on the important national, international and local issues
and problems, This is essential .
to good representative government," Congressman Johnson
explained, suggesting that letters be addressed to him at his
Washington office, Room 2347
Rayburn Building, U.S. House of
Representatives, . Washington,
D. C, 20515, so that the correspondence will serve as a
ready reference during the
actual session of Congress,
Congressman Johnson expressed personal appreciation
to the many campaign workers
who carried the bulk ofthe campaign effort during the late summer and early Fall months. The
California legislator said this
was especially important to him
because of the late adjournment
of the 90th Congress which prevented his return to California
for: active campaigning until
mid-October,
