JAILBREAK: More doors
throughout Western Nevada
County have been locked the
past couple nights than ever
before in recent history..
Even the side entrance to the
Nevada County Sheriff's office was locked é@he night
after THE ESCAPE..One
sheriffs deputy Monday night
put a quick phone call in:
"Say, check and see if my
carison the street. My wife
used it last and I want to

see if the keys are in it." It
had: a full tank of gas, the
deputy worried. But his wife
had neatly tucked the auto
in their garage.
RAIN, WHAT'S THAT ?:
We've heard reports that
there “always” had been a
good rainfall prio, to the
o pening of deer season or
coinciding with that time of
the year.
In,checking, the California
Division of Forestry said,
"No", there have been years
when rainfall did not hit untill October---Oct. 10, to
be precise.
Allthis indicates that this
year is the driest so-far in
modern history. We haven't
checked all the past records ,
but earlier years in history
usually showed heavy rainfall---three or four years are
recorded in Nevada City with
more than 100 inches of rain
for the season.

covering 820 acres,
At present, all land bordering the proposed lake is
in private ownership.
The issue arose after Executive Secretary Verne
Jones read a letter to the
commission from Alfred
Heller, Nugget publisher. In
his letter, Heller stated:
“Rollins Lake, being so close
to the population center of
the area, could provide a
major attraction not only
to the tourist, but to present
and potential home owners
and taxpayers in the western portion of the county.
At present there is no body
of water in this area of recreational potential comparable to the projected Rollins
Lake.” = .
Commission Chairman
Charles Litton stated that
After Fire
Planning
“After the Fire---Then
What?" is the question that
will be answered by panelists
of the Sacramento Tahoe
Forest Forum Friday evening
atthe VictorianRoom of the
historic National Hotel in
Nevada City.
Panelists include Leon Sanford, Southern Pacific Land
Co.; Walter Bemis, California Division of Forestry;
John McNie, Michigan -California Lumber Co; and moderator Hal Turmer, Tahoe}]-:;
National Forest.
Each of the speakers has ‘
been involved by recent wild
firesand is in a position to
look at recovery problems,
according to JoeGriggs,
secretary of the forum.
Some of the questions that} *
will likely be discussed are:
what is the attitude of small
the question of the county’s
responsibility in
public access to important
recreation areas
the commission.
He said the ccunty’s future lies
field and that “the public
deserves access’ to recreation areas. Regarding Rollins Lake, he said: “They’re
not going to build these
things every year. If we
dilly-dally in this case. it
will be too late.”
Noting: that the NID is
already negotiating the purchase of options in the area,
and that: private speculators
are already active, the commission asked the district
attorney’s office to consider
legal means for the county
to act to preserve the public
interest at Rollins. Litton
was also authorized to write
a letter to the board of supervisors reporting — these
findings. :
Robert Hopkins, NID engineer, said he thought there
was little doubt the--NID
and PG&E would agree on
terms for the construction
of the project. He said NID
might work with the county
in a “joint venture” to provide recreational access and
facilities at Rollins.
Other members of the
commission in attendance
were Charles Kitts, Cecil
Edmunds, John Lcoser, and
Mrs. Melva Hillier.
