We should like to point out some facts that -are pertinent at this point. IfReagan is elected, the State will still generally berun by the Democratic majority of the Legis!ature--except for one important field-that of conservation of all of the magnificent resources of this state. Most of these resources are under the various commissions and boards of the State, most of whom are appointed by the Governor. (Continued on Page 2) Grass Valley Poundmaster Gets Job Reinstatement Grass Valley's embattled poundmaster, Floyd Dorrell got his job back last week because the city personnel commission overste pped its authority. This is the way it all boiled down at the City Council meeting of Oct. 25 when city attorney William Cassettari told the council that the personnel cOm mission action to retire Dorrell was: not within the scope of the commission. The Dorrellcase, which has been popping up for several.weeks, resulted from charges that Dorrell failed to act when notified that a horse had been struck by a car on Sept. 25 on Highway 49. The city council suspended him from his job on Sept. 28 and the personnel commission found 4.00 — SALE 1.00 NOW 1.00 him guilty of negligence and ordered that he be retired. Last week the city attorney said the personnel commission could exon‘erate, suspend, place on probation, fine or fire an employee, but retire (Cont. on Page 24) Big Absentee Vote Omens for a big election next Tuesday were shown yesterday with a big return of abser‘se ballots to the courthouse. Ballots has tobe into the county clerk's office by 5 p.m. yesterday tobe valid and by mid-afternoonmore than 800 had already been returned and County Clerk Ted Kohler was predicting that the count might go over 900 before the deadline. CITIZENS OF NEVADA County Tuesday were presented with the General James Collins Ceremonial Sword. The sword was donated to the county by Edna Collins Gordon. The sword was presented to General Collins for his service in the Mexican War. Hecame to Nevada County in 1849 and was elected Nevada County Treasurer. Telephone Company Conducts Tour Of Bullards Bar Project Civic and government leaders from the SacramentoValley and foothills area were taken on a tour oi thenew Bullards Bar Dam project on the North Yuba River last week by Pacitic Telephone Co. The local group hosted
by Pacific Telephone's Grass Valley Manager George Hutchins included Nevada City Mayor Arch McPherson, Grass Valley Mayor John Hodge, ersion tunnel for the huge new Bullard's Bar Dam on the North Yuba River. "Bizz" John(Cont. on Page 24) County Dates Two Elections The Nevada County Board ot Supervisors: yesterday set the dates for two elections. The election for the Lazy Valley Acres Road Division in Penn Valley was set for Nov. 29. At that time voters in the district will decide if they want to pay for improvements to the roads in the subdivision. Under the Road Division arrangement, the residents will borrow $20,000 tor the road work from the county.. This willbe paid back overa six year period. The loan is interest free. The board set Dec. 13 decide whether or not the French Corral County Water District Should be dissolved, Western Lakes Big New Land Deal Described The process of setting upa planned rec reational community in Nevada County was outlined for Grass Valley Rotary Club members Monday to Bob Onorato, Western Division manager for United States Land, Inc., and local representative of Western Lakes Properties, Inc. in Nevada County. Onorato outlined how the new Nevada County site off Magnolia Road near the Placer County line was selected trom more than:200 possible locations. After checking the economics and governmental organizations, Onoratc told the Rotarians that the Nevada County site was moved to the top of the list. Western Lakes Properties, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of United States Land, Inc., which is developing fully planned recreational communities throughout the country. He said the firm got into the recreation tield after sensing a lag in the primary home market. After research and study, United States Land moved into the field of developing recreation communties tor secondaryhomes which would provide tor the whole scope of recreation right at the home site, He had praise for the Nevada County Board of Supervisors4and the Planing Commission. He said the board of supervisors was one ofthe best integrated and informed he had ever met and "they played a very big part in getting us here."
