They timed her visit to coincide with deer hunting season. Alice's favorite sports are hunting, fishing, and gardening. She has two automatic Rifles and knows how to use them. This doesn't sound like our neighbor of the high heels and beautifully arranged hair. the office at Weaverville, where she picked up her license, questioned her ability. But she was "born in those mountains" and she came home with the bacon-well venison: They are planning a goose shoot at Tule Lake when the season opens. And they saw Bear up North so may get that in also. * * * Idon't like to report unhappy things, but Mrs. Helene Hurlbut of Rough and Ready agrees with me that this is something of which we should all be aware. Ona recent pleasure trip to Mexico City Helene hadallher peoperty stolen. The ladies had been assured by the management that their things would be perfectly safe. During the night thieves broke in, cut the glass from the station wagon and removed ever ything inclShe says even uding their lovely mink coats. The authorities were polite but discouraging. Many of you are thinking of winter vacations. If you are planning a trip into Mexico remember Helene's experience. Your insurance is not valid outside our U.S.
borders. Of course, Helene's trip was ruined. She took a plane home immediately. Never did get to Mexico City. Her companion went on since she had just recently established residence in Mexico. Maybe she will have some chance of recovering her property. * * OK * The Newcomers Lyric Ensemble under the direction of Mrs. Helen Beatie of Rough and Ready has been selected as one of the participants in the Twin Cities Concert Association Local Talent program. This local talent show will be given April 8, 1967 at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Bldg. There are four other Rough and Ready ladies in the Ensemble, Mrs. Barbara Miller, Mrs. Olyve Simmons, Mrs. Elaine Vogt and Mrs. Fay Dunbar. We are proud of Helen and our Ensemble. We willbe singing three programs early inNovember, for the Grass Annual Musical Will Be Held Tomorréw Night The annual musical sponsored by the Nevada County Historical Society will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday. in the auditorium of the Nevada City Elementary School. Preceding the social evening, a short business session was conducted with Sybil Ridinger, guardian neighbor, _ presiding. Valley Chapter of Eastern Star on November 7, for the Grass Valley Methodist Church tea on Nov. 10th, and for the World War 1 MVeterans and its Ladies Auxiliary on Nov. 16. = * * * Xx Rough and Ready Gra~nge met last Friday night and completed plans for an extra public party in November. The regular party will be November 26. They felt some of their party neighbors might like daylight hours best. So they arranged this special party for Sunday November 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Grange Hall. If it is well attended ‘here will be other afternoon parties. On Saturday November 12 there will be a spaghetti dinner served from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hall. The gentlemen of the Grange are going to prepare dinner, except dessert. The ladies are planning s sale of home cooked goodies to take home. * * OK * Last Saturday evening, my neighbor, Mrs. Olyve Simmons and I attended the Twin Cities Concert Associations presentation of the Goldberg Quartet. It was a beautiful program very well done. and a fine selection of music, in my opinion. The point of my story is that there were only two in our Rough and Ready group for this. concert there were five of us. The rest of the audiencewas in just abou chat same proportion. It weuld be difficult to find anything better than the Marine Band, but this Quartet was excellent. It really is unfortunate that so few people attended. Miss Goldberg told us that the Harpsichord she uses must be partly torn down each time in order to move it to its next destination. It is a replica of an 1860 (I think) instrument. It was beautiful and most interesting. Miss Goldberg used the piano for accompaniments. , * oO * O* Sadie Ryan of Redwood City is here for a short Visit. Mrs. Ryan was Sadie Martel and is living at the old Martel Ranch on Hwy 20 while she visits relatives and old friends.
