The reason we are not going to buy one is that daddy likes football. Does your father like sports? My mother says my father and my brother have some screws loose someplace when it comes to football because they are always watching it on T.V. Last Saturday when mother and I came home from shopping, daddy and my brother were lying on the sofa watching one football game on T.V. and listening to another on the transistor radio. They were eating cookies and drinking milk and there were crumbs all over the carpet. This upset mother because they are not supposed to eat in the livingroom. She told daddy that as far as she was concerned, football was for the birds. Daddy said he had never seen birds play football but he guessed their ground game couldn't be much. As I went into my room I heard mother say that daddy should stay away from the squirrels. This is a kind of joke. Wellright after that a commercial came on T. V. and that is the reason we are not going to get a new Cadillac The commercial was about how discriminating people drove Cadillac cars. When the commercial was over daddy was fit to be tied because while the commercial was going on his old college team had scored a run or something and he had missed it because of the commercial. Hetold mother that just because of that he was not going to buy a Cadillac car--never--never as long as he lived. He said he was a discriminating man but that the T.V. people and the Cadillac people had discriminated against him by plugging their old cars just when his team was crossing the finish line and so he wasn't going to buy one of those fancy cars. Mother said she hadn't been holding her breath until daddy bought a Cadillac, but as long as daddy had decided not to buy one, which she didn't know he was thinking about anyway, she was sure he wouldn't mind if she used some of the money and bought some new drapes for the livingroom. So I guess we are going to get Sometimes I think sports contests upset my father too much, Do you think so too? As in all small crganizations, the Square Krots had financial difficulties, One generous family loaned the club arecord player and speakers for two and one half years until the club was able to buy its own. The Square Knots are now solvent and have grown from 8 people to over 120. Many have worked long hours making the club the ward is the hours of wholesome fun they provide countless couples that have enjoyed being a part of the Square Knots.
Bob Lee, the club caller for seven of the Square Knots’ eight years, has taught hundreds of couples to square dance, and at present is inStructing a class of 32 couples. He has worked many hours improving his calling, learning new numbers and planning classes, and as a result is one of the outstanding callers of Northern California. Lee has always had the help and encouragment of his charming wife, LaNell, They have not just taught people to square dance, but have served the club when and wherever needed. They have been the guiding spirit behind the friendship, cooperation and funthat is as much a part of the Square Knots asthe dancing.
