In Concert
By Dean Thompson
More than two dozen 10 to 16
year old singers, dancers and
musicians from Soufli, Greece,
captured a near-record concert
crowd in Grass Valley Nov. 13.
The two-hour program was well
received by an audience of nearly
600 persons at the Nevada Union
Junior High School auditorium,
and the 1963-64 concert season
got off to a successful start.
Favorite vocal renditions by the
group were several Souflian folk
songs, including "Pita" (the pie),
"Khelona" (the turtle), and
"Soultana Souflioutouda” (the
Souflian soultaness).
_ “O Agogiatis” (the driver) was
rendered in an active and expressive manner by the mandolin
group, chorus, featuring Panagiota Calfa as soloist.
Most enjoyable solo of the evening, in the view of this writer,
was "“Athina" (Athens) assung by
Rea Nzionia with the backing of
the mandolin group and chorus,
The unusual tonal quality of
the instruments coupled with a
beat that is unique to local concert-goers did not dampen the
audience response.
The singing and musical renditions were not polished performances, generally speaking, but
the evening proved an enjoyable
one to the large audience.
Least professional on the program was the simple folk dancing done by the youngsters. The
dances were simple and the presentation lacked imagination and
verve.
The group came closest to an
entertaining presentation of
dancein “Tsamikos", which had
elements of the Slavakian kola
injecting life into the otherwise
dull dance numbers.
