Page 8. ‘NUMBER PLEASE Printing Strike Phone’ Books And Operators A San Francisco printing strike now in its third month is starting to affect telephone information service here. Pacific Telephone Manager G. O. Hutchins saidthe strike, which has already delayed the new Butte, Nevada, Sutter and Yuba Counties directory, is also holding up delivery of information records used by on in this area. These records, which had been issued on a daily basis, include all new tele phone numbers in Grass Valley and other nearby communities. Since the strike began, the firm which normally prints the records has been unable to produce daily lists of new numbers; and the printing job has been shifted to another firm. Although new inform ation records are being shipped each day by air, they are generally several days behind schedule. Meanwhile, the phone company has resorted to other methods including mimeographed bulletins in an effort to keep up with the daily changes. Asa result, Hutchins said, information operators must refer to numerous lists instead of one master list when answering requests from customers. “This has slowed up the operators considerably in getting information for our customers, ” he said. We are now using extra operators, but there is still some delay.
