service by District Engineer W.L,
head of the Third Highway District headquartered in Marysville.
Snider is in charge of the Nevada City maintenance territory.

of Grass Valley, highway Superintendent in
charge of the Nevada City
maintenance territory
for the California Division of Highways, has
been awarded a pin and
certificate for "faithful public service" on completion of 25 years of
state highway work.
District Engineer W.
L. Warren made the presentation recently in special recognition ceremonies at Marysville
headquarters. Snider
was commended and congratulated on this milestone in his career in
letters signed by Governor Edmund Brown and
Director of Public Works
John Erreca.
Snider distinguished
himself in 1952 when, as
a highway foreman, .he
and: several crewmen
carved a rescue path in
a blizzard through snowdrifts up to 20 feet high
to reach the stalled streamliner "City of San
Francisco" which had
226 passengers aboard.
All were removed to
safety without mishap
and Snider's intimate knowledge of the terrain and
highway alignment were
credited in the dramatic
mass rescue,
Snider joined the Division of Highways in 1941
as a laborer assigned to
road maintenance in the
Truckee area. He advanced through several
promotions to foreman
and was appointed district safety supervisor
in 1953, holding this
post for three years.
In 1956 he was sent to
the Nevada City territory
as foreman and two years
later was appointed superintendent in charge of
the territory which includes major portions of
Placer, Nevada and Sierra counties and small
sections of Yuba and El
Dorado counties.
He heads acrew of 52
who maintain 230 miles
of state highways over
some of the most rugged
mountain terrain in the
state.

bean especially wonderful Thanksgiving for Ted
and Karen Olson. They
are expecting another

Last Tuesday night the
Rough and Ready Fire
Dept. elected 7 members
to guide it through the
coming year. The lucky
seven are Jack Bixler,
Thurston Broadus, Fay
Dunbar, Don Litchfield,
Art Phelps, William Thomas and Gene Walter.
Pat Litchfield was selected as Secretary-Treasurer. The Board has
planned a Turkey Shoot
for Movember 20th. It is
hoped this event will become a good annual
money maker for the Fire
Department.

Famed Motion picture
and television star Jackie
Cooper has been reappointed California Chairman for 1967 March of
Dimes it was announced
today by Basil O'Conner
president of The National
Foundation -March of
Dimes. The Campaign
for funds to support this
voluntary health agency
in its fight against birth
defects is held in January.
Inhis role as Chairman
the veteran actor will
lead in the organization
and direction of thousands
of volunteers throughout
the state.
Cooper currently is
serving as Vice Presidentin Charge of the
Television Program
Production Division of
Screen Gems, Inc.
He and his wife, former
New York Advertising
Executive, Barbara
Kraus, whom he married
in 1954, live in Beverly
Hills, They have three
children: Russell James
9, Jufie Merdith 8 and
‘Christina 6. He is also
active in the Naval Reserve, holding the rank
ofLievtenant Commander and has been awarded the Distinguished
Public Service Award,
Citation and Medal by the
Navy Department.
In accepting the appointment, Cooper stated,
"I think most of us’ would
consider. it alarming if
we heard about an epidemic in which a new case
struck every other minute, which was the second
greatest destroyer of
life, and which caused
half of all cases of mental reta-dation. "Yet,"
he poined out, "birth
defects are responsible
forallthis, and for much
more human damage.
Many defects are not aparent at birth. The
appear later in life, causing physical and mental
disability."
