"NEVADA COUNTY.
Productive Valley, Foot-Hill and
Mountain
A Combination of Natural Advantages Not Excelied in
the State—Anm Encouraging Season.
[8. F. Chronicle; Jan. 1, 1889.
Nevada county claims special attention as one of the few counties of Californiain which the three principal industries of the. State—mining, agriculture and horticulture—are extensively
carried on side by side. The county
is accessible by rail, the Central Pacific Railroad running along its southern boundary « considerable distance,
and crossing its extreme eastern end,
while the Nevada County Narrow
. Gauge Railroad intersects its central
portion, extending north from Colfax
to Nevada City and passing through
Grass Valley in its route. Geographically the county lies a_ trifle north of
the centrai line of the-State, and extendsfrom the Sacramento valley on
the west to and beyond the sumniit of
the Sierra Nevada.
In the ‘western portion the altitude
averages some 1300 feet above the sea
ly sloping hills and ridges with here
‘and there large sized tracts of comparatively level land. In the central
section is the upper part of the horticultural belt, and here also are most
of the great quartz and gravel mines
which have since pioneer days been
The eastern extremity is very mounjtainous in character, the-principal industries thereof being lumbering, iceshipping and grazing. About % 000
acres of land are contained in the horticultural belt of the county, which includes the townships of Nevada, Grass
Valley, Rough and Ready and Bridgeport. = ;
A great variety of productions is insured within these limits. . Fruits and
vegetables maturing early, or requir
ing a long and warm._season, thrive
particularly well on lands facing to the
{south where the rays of the sun have
full force; while the larger and more
slowly maturing fruits—flourish-on-the
cooler and more moist lands with a
northern exposure. The valley lands
between the. ridges and hills have in
most cases but little brush upon them,
and though well furnished with. water
from springs and streams are not as
well calculated for fruit growing as for
the production of hay and pasturage.
Among.the most profitable fruits to be
raised here is-the pear, whichr is followed closely by the apple, both. attaining in Nevada county the.greatest
perfection in size, flavor and keeping
qualities. Grape growing is rapidly
becoming an important.industry here,
this being the natural home of the
vine. Nevada county port wine has
already in two competitive exhibitions
where the principal wine-producing
sections were represented, earned the
first prize, and other varieties of wine
shown have stood high in thé list of
successful competition. The olive
thrives here, attaining perfection in
size and quality. In the extreme lower portions of the county the orange ‘is
profitably grown, the fruit maturing
unusually early and a full crop being
generally obtained. ¥
No county in the State is more abundantly watered. Mining and irrigation
ditches, fed from natural and artificial
lakes in the higher altitides, th ead
all sections. This water is of thé purest, and the supply never fails. The
climate has an.invigorating freshness
and salubrity that is not to be found
in lower lands. There are no fogs, no
blizzards, no malaria. Large numbers
of people come annually froin the seacoast and valleys to spend the summers here, and thus rebuild their
shattered constitution. . ;
Adjacent to Nevada City-and Grass
Valley are located such well-known
and productive quartz mines as the
Providence, Nevada City, Wyoming,
Pittsburg, Neversweat, Idaho, Empire,
North Star and many. others. The
princip . claims are eqnipped with the
most modern machinery for mining
andumilbnoy. Washington and Eureks
townships have been for the pa-t jew
vears\rapidly rising into prominence
as quarta-mining sec ions, and several
properties there—such as ‘he Califonia, hucky Glan, W oshington, Yaiba,
ete.—are paying well. A number of

claitas in that loestey now belng prokpected give indications of proving
equaily rich. Meadow Luke district,
which in the sixties experienced a remartka ole boom which collapsed as
suddenly as it vame because of the
‘failure Of any of the processes then
known to separate the gold trom the
base metals contained in the rock,
was during the past summer a scene
of renewed activity because of a syndicate baving gone in there and partially:
demonstrated that the ores are reducible when properly treated. That is
peculiarly .the, ‘snow j«lt’’? of the
county, being at the summit of the
Sierra Nevada. When the winter
storms are over, the camp, now hibernating, will come out of its shell.
As to the towns of the county. Grass
Valley, with her pulation of 6000, is
enjoying marked prosperity because
of the success of quartz mining there,
which was never sivinig andy large returns as now. Nevada City, the county
seat, is laboring under somewhat of a
depressicn so far as business is concerned, becxuse of such setbacks as
the stoppage of hydraulic mining,
wage conflicts in one or two of the
largest quartz mines and a reduction
of force in those and two or three
other mines. But itis safe to aay that
Nevada City, as well as the other
towns in the upper. part of the county
