Coins, antiques, knitting at Gold‘n Treasures
Main Street in
Grass Valley
Do you collect, or would you
like to try your hand at collecting coins? Are you inthe market
for a distinctly ‘'one of a kind"
type of antique? Have you always
wanted to learn how to do fine
needle work or knitting?
There's a solution magically
simple at 203 West Main Street,
in Grass Valley .. at "'Bibi's
Gold'n Treasures".. where all
of those delightful things may be
accomplished under one roof!
Bibi and John Carruthers are
the owners of the exciting new
"botique'’ and associated with
them, as store manager, is
Laura Sherman whose knowledge of antiques is quite impressive.
Bibi, a native of Denmark who
came to the United States just
ten years ago, is the talented
instructor in needlework, knitting, embroidery and other
nimble-finger occupations or
hobbies, as you will. She conducts classes in various types of
needle-craft every Friday and
interested persons may call her
at 273-3202 to arrange for lessons,
Bibi, who has an enchanting
accent, spent most of this last
summer in Denmark .. and
when she returned to Grass
Valley she brought with her
many delightful items which may
be seen on display in the store
now. One coffee service, in beautifully decorated chinaware attracted the writer's covetous
eye.. Oh, my!
She also stocks needlepoint
magazines and "work kits" in
myriad patters, exciting enough
to lure the most blase among
us. Among these kits are those
for the creation of decorative
pillows, tapestry-like wall hang. ings, pictorial calendars, oldfashioned “samplers," bellpulls, and a covering for a brick
doorstop and many other items
which would make excellent gifts
for practically any occasion one
could name.
Bibi's opened for business in
' June of this year and store hours
are from 10 a.m, until 4 p.m.
Tuesday through Saturday. Until
Christmas, however, customers
will be served until 9 p.m. on
Fridays only.
John Carruthers, a long-time
BIBI AND JOHN Carruthers are the owners of the exciting new botique, Bibi's Gold'n Treasures at 203 West Main Street in Grass Valley. Specialties are antiques, coins and knitting
materials.
coin collector, specializes in
gold coins, some silver and currency. He is a professional appraiser and stocks a good line
of coin guide books and "starter
sets" for the novice numismatist. Included in these sets you
will find "Washington Quarters,"
“Liberty Head". and "Morgan
Type" dollars, "Indian Head"
pennies and "Jefferson" nickels,
to mention just a few. John is in
the store on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for consultations; and is notably patient with
youngsters delving intothe mysteries of money for the first
time.
Among the antiques on display
at the time of this writing were
some beautifully carved chairs,
one of them a very rare post
type maple rocker more than 100
years old with the original
wooden pins still intact; marbletopped chests of drawers, some
with stunning old mirrors which
undoubtedly reflected the faces
of some of our earliest settlers
many times; silverware of various kinds, including an old
"quad-plate" coffee pot of exquisite design and porcelain
lined. It was patented May 11,
1880 by the Libby Silver Company, And, an old mint-condition
Wurlitzer Juke Box which still
plays very well .. it should
make any collector of such items
simply drool, There are dolls,
also .. some of which must
have been the prized possesSions of little girls in a bygone
era .. these, and most of the
other antiques are a special interest of Laura Sherman.
And speaking of dolls ..
Bibi's stocks some wonderfully
constructed custom-made doll
houses and the dainty, smallscaled furniture and figures
needed to furnish them ..early purchase is recommended..
if you have a little girl to make
completely happy this Chirstmas. Do go in soon and see how
easily it will be to fill your
entire Christmas gift list at
Bibi's.
