MY HMRI IR SR SS ,
Editor: The Nugget
Dear Sir:
Several weeks ago (October
6) one of your writers mentioned seeing some old junked cars
lying beside Broad street near .
its intersection with Highway 49.
I, too, have seen them there
for many weeks; and it does seem
that with all the "improving"
going on downtown right now,
someone ought to have a little
more’ pride in our fown's. appearance. . .and do something
about removing those old cars,
It would be interesting to know
why they were just "dumped off"
there in the first place, and
more interesting to know how
long ‘they are to be left there.
What a blot on our landscape!
Talk about “litter laws" and
"pollution"; where do those two
items figure in this situation?
Sincerely,
/s/ MRS, ALBERT
AUSTERMANN
Nevada City, California
(Editor's Note: We also wonder when those old, abandoned
car bodies will be removed —
and by whom? We invite a reply
to this inquiry from a proper
authority.)
East county
commercial to
be reappraised
Elton A. "Bub" Tobiassen,
Nevada County Assessor, stated that appraisers-from the assessor's office in Nevada City
have started reappraising commercial property throughout
eastern Nevada County this
week,
The Western Nevada County
Area was reappraised and the
new values were placed on the
current assessment roll for the
1971-1972 year. The balance of
the reappraisal of commercial
is in the eastern Nevada County
area which will be reviewed for
fair market value whether an
increase or a decrease, and will
be. completed by late next spring.
The appraisers, according to
Tobiassen, will start inthe Donner Lake Areaas they have found
many recent sales of lake front
lots and commercial: property,
which creates the market value
as well as the fact that commercial properties have not been

reappraised since 1956, The appraisal procedure, in accordance with.state law, shows many
of these parcels are far out of
line with respect to the true
market value,
It was found ina recent sample
by the State Board of Equalization that sales of commercial
buildings were over-appraised
as well as under appraised,
therefore the equalization of
values is very important. Tobiassen is asking the business

The Nugget sure gets around.
Just had a confab with our circulation manager, who presented
me with up-to-the-minute circulation tally lists for checking purposes. We now have subscribers in such interesting
places as Juneau, Alaska, Vienna, Austria, and 27 of the 48
contiguous States. .. to mention a few. Bulk of our subscribers are in Northern-California — with heavy emphasis
on Nevada County. .. .and
the names will soon number
1,000! However, the point of this
yarn is the fact that our readers on the "outside" are — for
the .most part — former resi-dents who like to keep in touch
with what is going on in the
county; and who do not, for
various reasons, take the daily
‘paper. A case in point. . .quoting from a letter written by a
long-time subscriber in New
York State: "We cannot presently afford to take a daily
paper from home, so depend upon the Nugget for much other
information that that contained

North San Juan, We still own
property there, and like to know
how things are going. ..
thanks for printing so much
county news." So, if occasionally some items seem like "duplication" to local readers. ..
just keep in mind the fact that
there are many others who do
not see the daily paper. We have
to keep our coverage balanced
as equitably as possible at all
times. .. .to TRY to make
you all happy readers!
