Christmas Of
Our Times
Mone 5)
PEACE ON EARTH
NEW YORK (ED)-—If you're looking for a perceptive mirror of
our time, you'll find it in Christmas cards this year. American
artists from every section of the country have created contemporary masterpieces that express the ancient holiday spirit while depicting our very modern way of life.
With more than 50% of our population under 27, “youth” is the
byword of our time. For some of them today’s world is a “mod,
mod” place, and Ivan Chermayoff. captures that gay, swinging
mood with his lively brush and palette. His whimsical Santa card is
perfect for everyone who loves mini-skirts and pop art.
Christmas has always been a holiday for the young, beloved by
children of all ages for its gifts and goodies. In Jane Miller’s charming scene, two modern youngsters help nae to a traditional
treat of candy canes.
The growing interest in travel in the U.S. to see the many faces
of our country is expressed by the theme of “Christmas Coast to
Coast” in the American Artists Group 1968 ‘collection. Scenes
range from Jack Garver’s watercolor of the historic Spanish missions at Rancho de Taos, New Mexico, to Thomas Naegele’s view
of the contemporary urban scene—city folk bicycling in Néw York’s
famed Central Park on a frosty afternoon.
Even the radiant beauty of the traditional portrait of Madonna
and Child is brought into new focus in the modern-day colors of
Dean Ellis, an artist born in Michigan on Christmas day.
Nothing, of course, is more contemporary than the ageless message of Peace on Earth. Tom Morrow voices mankind’s yearning
for peace with an American Artists Group card showing representatives of many religions joined in one procession of brotherhood.
Expressing their personal viewpoints, these artists have reinterpreted the beloved motifs of the holiday season— making it possible to wish family and friends “Merry Christmas” in a more
beautiful, more meaningful-way. .

Fish resources. are also
threatened by leaching and

Thus thetfuse of nuclear

increasing, and through radionuclide tagging’ of particular
ecology systems it is becoming possible to unravel
the movements of the animal
kingdom.
The need for knowledge of
the ecology of forested areas
is becoming increasingly evident as man intensifies his use
of forested lands for wood
products, watersheds, wildlife
habitat, and recreation.
Parallel needs for knowledge of the ecological effects
of insecticides and pesticides
aie also obvious following the
widespread use and misuse of
these chemicals. Many scientists have voiced concern over
the use of insecticides preceding knowledge of the total
effects of the substances on
the environment, especially
upon the species for which
the control is being sought.
The use of radionuclidelabeled insecticides, such as
malathion and DDT, allows
the detection of the pesticide
more readily than chemical
techniques. As use of pesticides increase, redistribution
of the substances becomes
critical, QHio State University, which is studying radionuclide tracer techniques for

Bramkamp resigns
as OEDP director
Lynn BramkampSr. is resigning as executive director of the
Overall Economic Development
Plan committee after less than
four months on the job.
Bramkamp's resignation,
written last Friday, was read
Tuesday after the county board
of supervisors held a one-hour
executive (closed) session on™
the subject.
At various times during the
hour, the supervisors conferred
with Bramkamp, with members
of the OEDP executive committee, with County Counsel Leo
Todd and finally by themselves,
The director's resignation
will take effect Dec. 19, one
month from the date the board
accepted it.
In this letter, Bramkamp said:
"While the program has considerable potential for the welfare of Nevada county, I feel my’
continuance in the executive position I now hold is unduly delaying accomplishment of my
original purpose in coming to
the county which was to retire
from active and full time participation in business affairs,"
Upon returning to open meeting, the supervisors unanimously accepted the resignation
and voted to send Bramkamp
a letter "of commendation for
_ his efforts for OEDP."
Bramkamp was the first person hired for the local OEDP
staff after it was decided in the
summer to expand from a purely volunteer layman organization
and hire professional assistance. A federal grant was obtained to pay part of the cost,
The OEDP executive committee originally recommended
Bramkamp's hiring, but the position actually is filled by the
supervisors.
His resignation will leave the
office with one employe, Mrs,
Sandra Rennie, the program
planner. She is the second person
to fill that position, A manhired
earlier resigned after it was
learned he was on probation from
a conviction of failing to submit
a contributions and earning report.
In recent weeks, the supervisors also were asked, and reluctantly approved, a change in
location of OEDP's office,
Bramkamp argued that the original space along Main Street
in Grass Valley was difficult
