program in Sierra County is
now in full swing.
Projects underway include,
reccnstruction of the Wild
Plum Campground, near
Sierra City; construction of
fuel breaks to aid in control
of wildfire on the Downieville and Sierraville districts; repair of storm damage to National Forest roads;
repair of storm damage and
rehabilitation of the Alaska
Peak, Saddleback and Calpine fire lookout buildings;
rehabilitation of residences
at Downieville and Sierraville; rehabilitation of the
Pliocene and American Hill
Guard Stations near Alleghany; and construction of
range drift fences in the
Loyalton area,
The projects now underway are slated for completion by Dec. 15.

There are some 2, 000 boys
aged 8 to 18 enrolled with
more than 800 adult volunteers assisting with the operation of the program. One

New units will be organized in Rough & Ready, Grass
Valley and Nevada City,
Washington and other areas
inthe county where the boys
and parents request same.
The units have assisted in
many community activities
during the past. Currently
they have aided with the polio clinics, distributed
posters forthe American Red
Cross, T.B,. Seal organization, Heart Fund, Civil Defense, and others,

has been during the fire season. Scouts and Explorers
have made sandwiches, as

Scouts Serve Youth Needs In’ County

Last spring more than 10,
000 young trees were planted
in the various burns by the
scouts and explorers. The
Council has a summer camp
at Soda Springs that has received a Grade A rating for
the past four summers. It now
ranks as one of the foremost
scout camps in A merica,
Boys from this area attend
each summer. Several of the
Explorers from this area have
served on the Camp Staff in
recent years, The Council
has two week-end camps,
one located in Grass Valley,
An area donated by Benjamin Berg. It is now being
developed by the men and
boys together with many local organizations and agencies, It will eventually become a very beautiful camp
spot for scout groups to stop
overnight and for the local
groupsto use for test passing
and camping.
Scouting has done much
for the young men of Western
Nevada County through the
years. It is growing. Boys
still desire to become members. Sponsors of units are
needed aswell as many men

leadership of the various
