Whether stocks went up or down, California's financiers knew that, for sparkling refreshment, beer was a good investment. For then as now, beer was the traditional beverage of moderation. But beer means more than enjoyment to our state. The Brewing Industry pays more than 12 million dollars in taxes to the State of California each year, money that helps support our hospitals, schools and parks. TODAY, in its centennial year, the United States Brewers Association still works constantly to assure maintenance of high standards of quality and pro. , priety wherever beer and ale are served. of Grass Valley. By Robert Wyckoff “My operation is like a small thorn in a large side, " claims Wesley B. Moore, owner of Western Grinding in Grass Valley, a plant which sharpens and rebuilds precision parts for complex glass container making machinery. The large side to which Moore refers is the huge glass container industry. The small thorn is the size of his operation, Moore and his son-in-law, Les Allstot, make up the entire staff of Western Grinding. For a number of years Moore was the only, machinist west of the Mississippi who specialized inthis work. Recently another such operation was started in Southern California. Wes and his wife, Marge, are outdoor people. In 1949 they journeyed north from Los Angeles to spend a summer in western Nevada County and w ere immediately sold on the area, It wasn't until 1953 however that Moore packed up his grinding machines and moyCalifornia possessed different languages or dialects. ed them and his family to LETTER FROM VENEZUELA..Mr . bands: shoulder as the two read a recent inquiry from a potential So. American customer. Machinist Likes Area, Serves World Grass Valley. Moore had been a machinist in Los Angeles since 1934 and decided that because of the specialized nature of his business he did not haveto be in close proximity to his customer's plants, All but one of Western Grindings clients are outside of Nevada County. Orders come from as far away as Texas, Oklahoma and Georgia. Recently a query was received from the Owens-Illinois glass people in Venezuela about doing their sharpening work, No machine shop in South America is equipped tohandle the work. Moore's biggest customer, the Owens-Illinois plant in Oakland recommended his work to its Latin American branch, Western Grinding’s busiest time is during the winter when most of the container manufacturers shut down operations to overhaul container making equipment. This fits right in with Moore's plan-~--work hard in the winter and enjoy Nevada County and the surrounding area in the summer. over her husWestern Grinding puts many outside dollars into circulation inthe county and Moore proves that byhis heavy winter work load and za light summer schedule a person can really have his
