“Uncle Tom's Cabin.”
The Virginia City Enterprise has
this to say.of the performances in that
place of the Ewing Uncle Tom. Company which will appear at this city tomorrow and Tuesday evenings: ‘Mr.
White gives a strong and pathetic rendering of the role of a simple-hearted,
good, old slave, who has no impulses
other than those prompted by conscience and the teachings of religion.
Mr. Caine’s Legree was well received,
as was also Mr. Turner’s St, Clair. The
characters of Eliza and Cassy were
faithfully portrayed, and Georgie
Caine acted the part of Eva admirably in her earnest, childish way. Miss
Ryan, as Topsy, gave’a humorous impersonation of the role that kept the
house in laughter and made her a
prime favorite. The plantation songs
by the quartette were -wetl rendered
and encored. One of the salient features of the production was the scenery, which was elaborate and effective.
Altogether, the company is composed
of clever performers, and portray well
Southern slave life as it was ‘befo the
wah,’ The piece has evidently ‘caught
on,’ and will attract good houses during the balance of the engagement.”’
