Down trickles light rain. A thin, ‘ greasy film spreads over the road surface. Along comes an unwary motorist who finds out the hard way that the first 15 to 30 minutes of rainfall are the most dangerous, who goes into a nasty skid. Motorists, reports the National Automobile Club, have a five to 10 per cent greater chance of skidding when driving on wet roads than when driving on dry roads. And in the early minutes of rainfall, these percentages get a sharp boost. To avoid skidding and "hydroplaning," the latter occurring when water on the pavement together with an increase of speed bring a loss of traction and control of the car, start with your tires. See to it that they have proper tread depth and correct inflation pressures. Watch out for bald tires. These work against your safety because you're much more apt to have a skidding accident when your tread depth has worn down to one-sixteenth of an inch or less. Not only that, such faulty tread also causes a general lack of steering and braking <i . o (te, Dd» W“Rey » A A oA a, 4 > — A> ~ 2 ay Oh ” “ er Sr Sr Agee > ~~ a — a = —~ a pA Pee accidents effectiveness. So have a competent mechanic go over your tires carefully and often in the rainy season. If he comes up with a bald tire, don't procrastinate its replacement, Check tire pressure often, What should it be? Look in your owner's manual. Remember too that maximum air pressure and load limits are noted on tire sidewalls,. That's right, these are maximum figures. Don't get them confused with recommended pressure or load -Tatings, Contrary to the belief of some, underinflation is risky. If somehow you got the idea that reducing the amount of pressure in a tire. gives’ it better traction, better rid yourself of that idea. Such pressure reduction actually give less traction. Once you've seen to the care of your tires, you don't stop there in protecting yourself against a skidding accident, Now you should reevaluate your own wetweather driving habits, advises NAC, and break any bad ones that you might have. You will, of course, avoid sudden starts, sudden stops, sudden changes of direction, or cornering that is too fast or too sharp. —— Are — ~ The Sierra Economic Development District (SEDD), 134 South Auburn Street, Grass Valley, and Public Service Careers (PSC) Program Director James L.
