EDITORIAL : Highway Division Must Now Show Good Faith The overwhelming preference of the people of Nevada Gity for the downtown freeway route, as shown in last Tuesday's special election, must be accepted with good grace by all parties. We admit the results caused us some surprise and discomfort. However, we were pleased to see the enormous turnout of voters, and the universal agreement that Bob Paine and Dick Knee and their volunteer election board had handled the election totheir own credit and that of Nevada City. Dear Editor: Until one lives near a . } freeway, and is almost overcome emotionally and physically by the incessant noise, the obnoxious fumes, the roar of traffic, he cannot imagine what proximity to the modern freeway means. The acrid fumes _ penetrate the air with an oily scum that burns the nostrils and presses against the chest. You didn't see much of the ARTIST at the crucial moment; hisiface was under the cloth, and when he said, “Look at the bird", you smiled, and that was -Wet-plate. : . If you were having a serious picture taken, he'd say, “Look just over the left corner of the camera and hold it", and you did. If the picture showed you a bit grim or apprehensive, Swart enthused. “Look at the natural expression, just like seeing yourself in the mirror!” You believed the Master and were pleased as punch; and so was Swart wet-plates were expensive then. When Johann Swartz became naturalized he dropped the z, and Johann became plain John. He used to advertise: "J.S. Swart, ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHER Pine Street.
