A Bridge Is Built Workmen are now putting the finishing touches on Nevada City's famous Broad Street Bridge. By the time this paper reaches you traffic should be pouring across it and people along Broad Street who have suffered so long will be looking forward to days of good business again. Started about a year ago, the bridge across famed Deer Creek has been beset with troubles and delays. First the foundations were a problem and then when work was going at an accelerated clip, ZOOM the newly poured concrete just over the creek gave way and 11 workers were injured. There was a delay, then more workand then the rains came in torrents. Earl '"Bud'' Woods, the construction foreman in charge of the project never gave up As he told Rotarians at a recent meeting; 'We are going to finish this bridge on schedule, you can bet on it!" Then I am going home for a long rest, be back in the spring to finish the highway it's been a tough job, but we are doing it." Bud was true to his word and now at long last, we have our bridge in all it's slory and truly it looks nice. We are proud of it. When you have time, take astrolland walk over it. The scenery is nice and think well on what it takes to build a bridge. We wonder if the following poem, whichis one of our favorites would not be quite appropriate at this time ? We dedicate to ''Bud'"' Woods who would not give up.... An old man going a lone highway Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm vast amd wide and steep, With waters rolling cold and deep. The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. "Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near, "You are wasting your strength with building here. Your journey will end with the ending day, You nevex again will pass this way. You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you this bridge at eventide?" The builder lifted his old gray head. "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. The chasm that was as nought to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim-Good friend, I am building this bridge for him." Probably one of the ‘most eye-brow lifting items was that of accepting the resignation of Robert C. McWhinney from the County Plann_ing Commission and Parker Stortz, Clear Creek Rancher from the Recreation Commission. After this bit of business recently defeated Supervisor, Donald C. Blake, pulled a''Brownie" and moved the appointment of S tortz toa post on the Planning Commission. This action was passed byavoteof4to0. After the Board reconvened, supervisor elect "Bill" Thomas spoke on a point of personal privilege and protested the previous action. He asked the Board to reconsider their action and make the usual investigation preliminary to such appointments. He did not object to Stortz but was adamant in the manner in which the action was taken, The term to which Stortz ‘was named was the unexpired two and one-half years of McWhinney's term. The post on the recreation commission was not filled at this meeting. Thomas informed the board that he felt very strongly about this, and that he did not object to the appointee, only the manner in which the appointment was made. He asked that his objection be placed in the minutes of the Board. Stortz Speaker for Historical Society Dinner Parker Stortz, a County Recreation Commission member, will be _the guest speaker Dec. 1 at the annual Christmas dinner meeting of the Nevada County HistoricalSociety, inthe Nevada City Elementary School. Stortz will speak
onthe "relationship of recreation, the fourth largest industry in the nation, to our country!" Mr. Koster also confirmed that the recreation areas at Scott's Flat and Rollins Reservoirs willbe servedwith electric power from the P.G.& E, There was presented to the group a General Plan for Nevada County. There were special study maps. for Grass Valley and Nevada City. A final draft for the write-up of the General Plan will be on the press in the near future. These plans will include maps showing major recreation areas, ehistorical areas, N.I.D. areas and the Winter Sports area. One more detailed map will give more detail regarding private parks. "NO Parking" areas for two or three days may find-themselves witha ticket for each day and resulting fines of $40 to $60. The stiff penalties were put into effect in response to urgent requests from resortowners, the California Highway Patrol and state and county road maintenance departments. Full width of roadways must be kept clear so snow removal equipment can be operated properly and traffic can move in and out of the ski areas. Parking problems have been most acute along Interstate 80 in the Donner Summit area and al-. ong the roads leading into the Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows skiareas. ea CT a ce i Try Nugget Classified seeiaiauedamaaaiin Mrs. Lavena Laughlin, cafeteria supervisor, annources the following menu for Nevada City Elementary and Seven Hills Intermediate Schools: December 5-9 MONDAY Frankfurters & Hot Buns Buttered Corn Mixed Green Salad Peach Halves TUESDAY-Beans & Ham Buttered Spinach Carrott & Celery Sticks Pickled Beets Applesauce Cake Hot French Bread & Butter WEDNESDAY -Meat Loaf Parsley Potatoes Cole Slaw Apricot Halves Hot Whole Wheat Muffins THURSDAY-Beef Raviolis Buttered Peas & Carrotts Lettuce, Tomato & Cucumber Salad Pear Halves Peanut Butter Bread FRIDAY-Pizza Pie Buttered Green Beans Tossed Green Salad Pineapple Slices Bread, Butter & Milk Served with ALL MEALS,
