At Grace Lutheran November 5, 1975 Wed), The Nevada County Nugget 3 Three programs for the elderly Three programs for the elderly are carried on at Grace Lutheran Church with each separated financially from the other. . Dorothy Jones, in an effort to clarify existing confusion, has explained each of the -Gold Country Meals is a volunteer program. Nine churches and the American Association of Retired Persons rotate responsibility for serving a nutritious noon meal each Tuesday. There are many volunteers, including groups of high school girls who serve, who work to make this a success. Individuals and organizations support Gold Country Meals through contributions of cash and service. Participating churches are: Emmanuel Episcopal, Grace Lutheran, Peace Lutheran, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic, St. Paul Lutheran, Sierra United Presbyterian, Trinity Episcopal, and the United Methodist Churches of Grass Valley and Nevada City. —Telecare is the Information and Referral Center for Nevada County. The federal grant supporting it was $17,388 — for the fiscal year beginning . July 1. Next year the grant will be down to $12,300. It offers information on health and social services, social security and others. In addition Telecare is able to refer callers to other agencies if this is indicated. A corps of volunteer drivers take senior citizens to Gold Country Meals, shopping and medical appointments. If necessary the driver accompanies the person on errands. Telecare also administers the Senior Citizens’ Taxi Service. It has a paid staff of two with limited hours, but who also volunteer a number of hours. : Calls are answered between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. by volunteers. The Nevada County Answering Service also answers around the clock. . When the grant was approved statements of estimates from twé realtors were required. The realtors
wrote that rental for office ‘space and facilities used by Telecare at Grace Lutheran Church could not be duplicated for less than $375 per month. Part of the $375 is used to make up the 10 percent “in kind” funding required by the Older American Act. The church receives $125 per month from Telecare for usedepreciation and for utilities. -The Senior Citizens Taxi Service is supported by a $7,823 federal grant on a one time basis. Because the money is rapidly dwindling Ms. Jones said that it will be necessary to limit the use of taxi rides to _medical appointments starting Saturday. The program, according to Ms. Jones, is an excellent example of needs being met. There are no salaries or rent involved in the taxi service ' handled through the program at the church. The taxi is available 24 hours per day as well as weekends. It is the most flexible service available, according to Ms. Jones. Many who avail themselves of the service are unable to use the bus for physical reasons or because they live too far away from the bus route. Mileage for taxi service for the elderly has risen from 765 miles in May to 1,292 miles in September. The cost has escalated from $600 in May to $958 in September. This is why the attempt to limit it only to one medical appointment per week per individual beginning Saturday. “The only way this program can continue is for the board of supervisors to allocate county funds for the taxi service,” according to Ms. Jones. She believes that the only way supervisors will understand the need is to hear from those persons who depend on_ the service. Ms, Jones, in a memo from her desk, claimed that community interest and support for the program was demonstrated in May through September. During this period volunteers drove a total of 2,114 miles from their. homes and return to provide this service.
