for advance training. From there
his objective is to win a place
in the Sixth Fleet for his year

give me a hand on Saturdays I
knew he was a Serious and intense boy but I didn't know he

Planners approve 4 zone changes
The Nevada County Planning
Commissioners: approved al
four requests for rezoning following the second public hearings Monday evening.
The commissioners' recommendations for approval now
will go to the board of supervisors. The requests included
one to rezone lots in Alta Sierra Ranches to single family
dwellings with agriculture allowed and the size of the building sites as shown on the recorded map.
The second was to rezone
Alta Sierra Estates-seventeen
to single family dwelling, allowing commercial businesses; the
third was to zone the Glenbrook
Heights-Orchard Glen area for
Single family dwellings.
The fourth petition was t@ zone
Cascade Cove, Echo Woods and
Piney Woodse subdivisions on
Banner Mountain for single family dewllings with the lot sizes
a minimum of 40,000 square
feet.
Two requests for variances
ended in a tie vote among the
six commissioners present so
will go to the Board of Supervisors without recommendation.
Edwin O, and Lois D. Hendrickson asked for a variance to reduce the required front yard
setback from 20 feet to five
feet for construction of a garage at Donner Ski Haven,

A high proportion of them
may have blood-insulin abnormalities. According to Donald
Berkowitz, MD, of Temple University Medical School, their
too-high serum insulin levels
may perpetuate obesity by inhibiting the breakdown of fat.
Dr. Berkowitz bases his
analysis on a study he carried
out on serum insulin levels in
35 obese patients, with 25 patients of normal weight used as
controls,
Insulin levels were significantly higher in the obese patients in direct proportion to
body weight.
Dr. Berkowitz treated the
obese patients with a drug
called phenformin, (DBI), which
does not seem to .curb appetite
directly, but acts to lower levels
of excessive circulating insulin.
(Some also received an appetitedepressing drug.)
Most patients receiving phenformin lost weight--as much as
50 pounds in some cases--which
resulted, Dr. Berkowitz suggests, from the lowered bloodinsulin levels,
