Dr. Berkowitz bases his analysis on a study he carried out on serum insulin levels in 35 obese patients, with 25 patients of normal weight used as controls, Insulin levels were significantly higher in the obese patients in direct proportion to body weight. Dr. Berkowitz treated the obese patients with a drug called phenformin, (DBI), which does not seem to .curb appetite directly, but acts to lower levels of excessive circulating insulin. (Some also received an appetitedepressing drug.) Most patients receiving phenformin lost weight--as much as 50 pounds in some cases--which resulted, Dr. Berkowitz suggests, from the lowered bloodinsulin levels, No one knows for certain which comes first--obesity or insulin abnormalities. cerned a front yard set back for Larry K.
