The only building to have been
@ erected in the Washington District solely for religious purposes was the Catholic church that
stood strategically on a knoll
above the town jail and commanded a beautiful view of the
. South Yuba canyon.
Ed Brimskill, a merchant of
Washington, is said to have
hauled the altar with a team and
wagon from North Bloomfieldby
way of Nevada City.
The building was sadly neglected and vandalized in later
ears and collapsed from snow
in the winter of 1961-62,
Historian Myra Allen Sackett
wrote, "In my time there was
no priest living in Washington.
Every few months a Father
Claire from Nevada City came
and said mass at one of the different homes."
The Nevada City Daily Transcript of August 4, 1901, wrote:
"Next Saturday evening an entertainment and grand ball will
be given in McKee's Hall in
Washington for the purpose of
increasing the fund subscribed to
erect a Catholic church at that
place. The committee of arrangement is composed of enterprising citizens."
The Daily Transcript, July 19,
1901, dateline Maybert, carried
a story referring to the building fund: "Today we received
a visit from Rev. Father Vaughn
of Nevada City and B, McCulla,
a Catholic church at Wastington,"
A Catholic Church Btrectney

Omega church was attended every three months from Grass
Valley, the Washington church
attended from Grass Valley every two months and the church
at Fall Creek every three

As late as 1962-63, a Protestant group held Sunday School
services in the old Kohler Saloon building in Washington.
But in the United States Census of 1860, 18 churches were
listed in the combined Washington and Eureka (Graniteville)
townships,
A news story in the NevadaCounty Daily Morning Miner,
November 3, 1903, stated: "J.
H, Rogers, A. H. Hallett and
Frank McCutcheon will go to
the town of Washington today to
build the new Catholic church,
They will rush the work as rapidly as possible and hope to get
the roof on before stormy weather begins. This will be the first
church building ever put up in
the town."
On November 28, 1903, The
Transcript noted: "Father Clyne
has returned from Washington
where he went to look after
construction of the new Catholic church, The building will
be completed next week, at which

The Daily Miner-Transcript
carried the following story: "The

applied to the purchase of a
bell for the church, Kohler's Hall
will be the scene of the affair and an effort will be made
to give the people one of the
most enjoyable evenings they
have had in years. There will
be a fine musical and literary
