‘CUBS’ TAKE
SANTA ROSA ---Sierra College's Wolverine football
team found Santa Rosa a poor
place in which to make mistakes, and dropped a 21-6
Golden Valley Conference
contest to the league-leaders
Friday night.
The Wolverines stopped
the highly-touted Santa Rosa
ground attack and held ace
halfbakes John Walker and
Homer Mascorro to 49 yards
in 26 carries, but gave away
two first half “gift” touchdowns tothe Bearcubs to ruin
their chances for an upset.
The Cubs scored in the
second quarter-when Bob
Baguio intercepted a misguided Hank DeMello pass on
the eight yard line and scored for Santa Rose. The kick
was good and the Bearcubs
led 7-0.
The angered Sierrans
promptly marched back 75
yards on the kickoff to score.
DaleBunch, Frank Luna and
Butch Enkoji alternated in
biting off big chunks of yardage, with DeMello finally
hitting Enkoji on a 10 yard
pass play forthe score. A pass
try. for extra point failed;
score remained 7-6,
Then with less than one
minute left, Sant& Rosa got
a second score when end Jason Franci got behind the
Sierra safety men and took an
easy 59 yard touchdown pass.
Derek Shelton's second kick
was also good.

FROM WOLVERINES
ed with penalties which stopped drives by both teams,
Late in the final period Santa
Rosa reached Sierra's five
yard line as a result of a 15
yard penalty, then pushed
over the final score of the
game, quarterback Shelton
going over from the two-and
kicking the extra point.
Sierra was called for 16
infractions totalling, 151
yards, The yardage would
have been higher except for
three 15 yarders which had
to be settled for “half the
distance tothe goal". In the
final minute, Sierra was penalized back to its own two
yard line and two Sierrans in
succession ejected from the
game for arguing with field
judge Ed Matteoli.
Despite the loss, Sierra's
offense seemed to have jell+
ed, The Sierrans had several
drives, with fullback Dale
Bunch exceptionally strong .
Bunch gained 58 yards in 15
carries right up the middle
and caught two passes from
DeMello.
DeMello's passing to
Bunch, Enkoji and John Carney was the best displayed
this season by any Sierra
quarterback and the catching of the trio was exceptional. One fine catch by Carney, good for 35 yards, was
nullified by a penalty.
TheBearcubs, now 3-0 in
conference play, utilized a
big line well, Quarterback
Shelton outshone his running
backs for the evening. The
Santa Rosans face Marin this
week, with Marin the last
CVC foe expected to have a
chance of upsetting the Cubs.
Sierra College will host traditional rival Yuba College
Saturday evening at Roseville high school's stadium.
Game time will be 8 p.m.
The game will climax Sierra‘’s Homecoming celekrations. The game should be
rated a tossup, with the two
teams battling toa 6-6 tie at
Yuba last season.

Miners
GRASS VALLEY ---The Nevada Union Miners defeated
the Roseville Tigers Friday,
by a score of 20-7.
The first half was completely dominated by the NU
team. After recovering their
own kick-off, the Miners
pushed downthe field, where
Mark Paye threw to Bob
Thomas for the first touchdown of the evening. Gary
Parsons made the extra point.
After the next kick-off,
Roseville kept the ball for
only three plays before a pass
was intercepted by Harry
Thomas.
Ken Uhlthen made a first
down for NU, followed by a
29 yardrun by Harry Thomas
to the Tigers’ 9 yard line.
This ended the quarter 7-0.
Thenext TD was made by
Uhl, 3playslater, as he ran
aroundright end. Parsons
failed to make the extra
point, and the score stood at
13-0.
Near the end of the first
half, Uhl scored again as he
ran 45 yardstothe end-zone.
Parsons conversion was good
and the half ended 20-0.
Near the end of the third
quarter, the Tigers finally
gota drive under way. Martin Rodriquez intercepted a
pass, andthenheand his cohorts ran down the field to
the Miner nine yard line.
Four plays later, Dean West
passed to Frank Young for the
only Tiger touchdown of the
night. Rodriquez ran for the
extra point, making the
score 20-7.
Although both teams attempted to score, time ran
out, and the game ended
with the Miners triumphant.
TheNUJunior Varsity, on
the other hand, suffered
quite a defeat at the hands
of the Roseville Cubs.
On the first play of the
game, Ronnie Elam of Roseville, ran 54 yards for the
first touchdown of the evening, The Nuggets, afterreceiving the kick-off, drove
down the field to the one
yard line, where Mike Davidson made the first NU
touchdown,
Although it looked like the
Nuggets would hold their own
inthe game, fate had planned otherwise, for at the end
of the first half the score was
33-6, Roseville leading. The
Cubs hadinexorably marched down the field for five
touchdowns and three conversions in the first half
alone.
As if this wasn't enough
the Cubs scored 14 more
points in the second half,
Some consolation to NU
was the scoring for the Nuggets in the secondhalf. Rusty
Lain ran 48 yards for a touchdown and Steve Calkins
tackled Steve Woessner in
the end zone for a safety.
In the end, Roseville had
wonan overwhelming vic -.
tory over the Blue and Gold,
the final score being 47-15,
the Cubs, as it were, “pourconsiderable varnish on NU's
waffles”.
This week the teams play
Yuba City, in Yuba City.
