In SOUTH VIETNAM a military coup deposed the government
of Ngo Dinh Diem, Diem and his
brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu, head of
the secret police, were assassinated and the commander of the
Vietnamese Special Forces was
executed, Leaders of the coup
established the former Vice President, Nguyen Ngoc Tho,as
Premier of a caretaker government and promised election of a
civilian government soon. Ma-~
dame Nhu, finishing a lecture
tour in the U.S., accused the
U.S. of inciting the coup. She
planned to fly to Rome to join
her three children who have been
sent from Vietnam to. Rome.

A cease-fire between MOROCCO and ALGERIA was signed
last week, but fighting continued
two days after the cease-fire was
supposedto take effect, and the *
Moroccan Foreign Minister was
reportedly planning to take the
dispute to the U.N,

Atthe UNITED NATIONS, the
Political Committee of the General Assembly adopted by a vote
of 97to 1 a resolution calling for
further work to.effect a complete
ban on nuclear testing. Albania
voted against the resolution and
France, Cuba, and the Central
African Repbulic abstained.

Communist Chinese Foreign
Minister Chen Yi told visiting
Japanese newsmen in PEKING thathis country would not be able to
explode an atom bomb for “several years”, but that it intends to
acquire nuclear power within a
few years.

States declared that a “necessary
concomitant" to progress toward
complete disarmament is the establishment of a United Nations
peace-keeping force.

Within the next two weeks,
Standard Radio and Television
Company, CATV Division, will
propose an ordinance to Nevada
City, Grass Valley and Nevada
County governing bodied which
w ould give the firm a non-exclusive franchise for the construction and operation of a cable
television service which make
available multi-channel television reception and FM radio reception.
Subscription rates for this ser~vice will not exceed $35 for installation and $5 per month for
service, and the company stipulates that it will not enter the
television set sales and service
field.

is presently served by television,
it is shielded topographically
from the quality and quantity to
be expected, Our service will deliver more channels of good televisionreception to the community than. have been consistently

Cable TV eliminates the need
for antennas of any kind the application states. Any stanaard
television set will accept cable
television.and.subscribers will be
able to tune all channels carried
without converters or adaptors.
Standard Radio and Television
Company, which operates Channel 11 (KNTV) in San Jose, isa
wholly owned subsidiary of Sunlite Bakery, Inc., San Jose.
The bakery firm formed the
television company in 1954.
In the past eight years the
television subsidiary has move
from independent operation to a
primary network affiliate.

Announcement of the opening
of Sierra Memorial Lawn, Nevada County's first non-sectarian
‘endowed care cemetery was made
by J. Paul Bergemann owner of
the Bergemann Funeral Cha pe 1
today.
lawn covers 32 acres near Bost
Avenue at the southern edge of
Nevada City.
The area will also be the site
of the Bergemann Funeral Chapel
and mortuary now under construc ~
tion. The project was started
more than three years ago.
The cemetery lawns are at the
site of two of Nevada City's oldest
cemeteries, the Jewish and the
Chinese.
Separate plots will be available
to fraternal and religious groups.
The cemetery complex also
will include a mausoleum. Ap_ propriate statues following a religious theme will be located on
the grounds.

New Salary
Ordinance Is

Supervisors have their first draft
of a proposed new salary ordinance, but until the Nov. 14
meeting, the contents will not be
public.
Presented to the supervisors
Thursday by County Clerk John T.
Trauner with a request for a decision as towhether the first draft
was public, supervisors decided
to take a look at the ordinance
before opening it for public discussion.
Supervisor Gene Ricker saidhe
preferred to have a look at what
others on the “rotating committee"
of supervisors had come up with
before opening the issue to public
discussion.
Other supervisors agreed.
