California's participation in the fourth annual observance of National Highway Week will be highlighted by freeway openings, exhibits, and other special programs designed to focus attention on the state's highway transportation progress, accroding to Harrison R, Baker of Pasadena, chairman of the statewide committee coordinating the week's activiities, Baker, a Southern California civic leader and former member of the California Highway Commission, urged Californians to take advantage of the week's events, between October 4 and 10, to gain fresh perspective on “not just a road program, but a new system of transportation. " President Lyndon B, Johnson has officially proclaimed National Highway Week "in recognition of the importance of highway transportation to the social and economic progress and defense of our nation." In Sacramento, Governor Edmund G, Brown's Highway Week statement pointed out that California's 1,430 miles of completed freeways carry one-fifth of all the state's motor travel, and provide twice the safety of conventional roads, Baker also noted that this year is the 25th anniversary of California's freeway law, a pioneering
statute which serves as the foundation for the State's 12,400mile freeway-expressway system now in various stages of operation, construction or planning. “The organizations and individuals who are spearheading National Highway Week in California are very well aware of the local controversies which crop up in some built -up areas when freeway proposals are advanced, " Baker said, “We are also cognizant of the problems involved in providing adequate transportation in areas of scenic beauty. “These discussions, however, should not cause us to lose sight of the fact that the freeways which have been completed and are now serving our traffic and our communities have invariably helped tosolve the problem which is really at the heart of the controversy--lots and lots of people and cars, with many more coming. This is not just a road program, but a new system of transportation geared to California's future."Fou fast, service Call THUMPER CAB CO. 265 4439 20 Y EARS EXPERIENCE PHONE 273—8781 THE BEST MOVE YOU EVER MADE FREE ESTIMATES Silverware Diamonds Watches Clocks AND MANY OTHER GIFTS JEWELRY our Gold.
