" Sierra And Overland Emigrant Trail To Be Marked Approval of an allocation for a plaque marking the site of the Overland Emigrant Trail where it crosses Highway 49 in Nevada County was approved at the September meeting of the California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee. Gilbert Tennis, president of the Nevada County Historical Society, appeared before the committee meeting in Bridgeport, Mono County. Tennis submitted an application forthe Emigrant Trail crossing on Highway 49 and said the entire trail has been recorded, He said the Nevada County Historical Society wants to mark the trail wherever it crosses a major road in the county. Tennis also presented an application for registration of the North Star Pelton Wheel Power Plant in Grass Valley. The plant, which contains one of the largest Pelton wheels in the world, is currently being restored by the Society and the City of Grass Valley with volunteer help to house relics of the hardrock mining industry. The committee felt that the application stressed the Pelton Wheel as more of a curio than an historical item, The committee therefore requested the Nevada County Historical Society to resubmit their application stressing the plant as a whole as a step forward in the progress of electric power. The Historical Society agreed to do this and withdrew their application. The subject of some kind of sign to designate a local point of historical interest was discussed at length. Many applications for registration are received by the committee which do, not match the criteria because they are of local interest only. Thenext meeting of the committee will be on Dec, 14 in Cupertino. Mrs, Ruth Frantz, a Republican, has been named campaign coordinator for the committee.
