Sierra And Overland
Emigrant Trail To Be Marked
Approval of an allocation for a
plaque marking the site of the
Overland Emigrant Trail where it
crosses Highway 49 in Nevada
County was approved at the September meeting of the California
Historical Landmarks Advisory
Committee.
Gilbert Tennis, president of the
Nevada County Historical Society, appeared before the committee meeting in Bridgeport,
Mono County.
Tennis submitted an application forthe Emigrant Trail crossing on Highway 49 and said the
entire trail has been recorded,
He said the Nevada County Historical Society wants to mark the
trail wherever it crosses a major
road in the county.
Tennis also presented an application for registration of the North
Star Pelton Wheel Power Plant in
Grass Valley. The plant, which
contains one of the largest Pelton
wheels in the world, is currently
being restored by the Society and
the City of Grass Valley with volunteer help to house relics of the
hardrock mining industry.
The committee felt that the
application stressed the Pelton
Wheel as more of a curio than an
historical item, The committee
therefore requested the Nevada
County Historical Society to resubmit their application stressing
the plant as a whole as a step forward in the progress of electric
power. The Historical Society
agreed to do this and withdrew
their application.
The subject of some kind of
sign to designate a local point of
historical interest was discussed
at length. Many applications for
registration are received by the
committee which do, not match
the criteria because they are of
local interest only.
Thenext meeting of the committee will be on Dec, 14 in
Cupertino.
Mrs, Ruth Frantz, a Republican, has been named campaign
coordinator for the committee.
Other members are: Dick Kennedy, Mrs. Roy Tremoureux, Jt,
Mrs. Geraldine Fry, and Dan
O'Neill.
The local Citizens for Johnson
organization is part of a state and
national grassroots movement
backing the candidacy of Johnson.
The purpose of Citizens for
Johnson is to provide a place
where Republicans and Indepenents can actively and meaningfully work for the election of
President Johnson.
Persons interested in joining
the Nevada County Citizens for
Johnson may call the campaign

Hotel-Motel
Tax Proposed
For Placer
The Placer County Recreation
Commission passed a resolution
urging the adoption of a countywide hotel-motel occupancy tax
by the Board of Supervisors at the
regular Commission meeting here
Sept. 22.
J.H.. Grubbs, of Roseville,
Chairman of the Recreation Com-~
mission said that the occupancy
tax would provide the needed financing for the development of
outdoor recreation facilities.
According to the Commission
over 80 percent of the users of
outdoor recreation facilities are
and will be non-county residents
and thatthe proper source of financing for the development of
facilities for these visitors is from ,
the user.
The proposed excise tax now
before the County Board of Supervisors hashad three previous public hearings. Another hearing has
been set for October 13.
Grubbs said he believed that
tourism in Placer County would
boom if the County accepted a
leading role in providing needed
outdoor recreation facilities.
The Recreation Commission
has adopted a County-wide rec~reation development plan that
advocates the user-pay type financing programs,
In other actions the Commission
adopted by-laws and elected officers as specified in the recently
adopted County Ordinance setting
up the Recreation Com mission as
an official agency of Placer
County Government.
The officers of the new Commission are: J. H. Grubbs, Roseville, Chairman; C, C, Roumage,
Auburn, Vice-chairman; and, J.
P, Wyatt, Lincoln, Secretary.
